What is a full stack software developer?

Full Stack Software Developers are professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end web development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining all parts of a web application, including user interfaces, server-side logic, databases, and integration with other services. Their expertise allows them to work on entire projects from start to finish, making them versatile and valuable team members. Full Stack Developers typically use a variety of programming languages and frameworks to accomplish their tasks.

How do full stack software developers typically balance front-end and back-end responsibilities within a team?

Full Stack Software Developers are often expected to seamlessly switch between front-end and back-end tasks, depending on the project's needs and the team's structure. In most environments, you may collaborate closely with UI/UX designers for front-end work and with DevOps or database specialists for back-end aspects. Balancing these responsibilities requires good communication and adaptability, as priorities can shift rapidly during a development cycle. Over time, you may find opportunities to specialize further or advance into technical leadership roles, depending on your strengths and interests.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) technologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, databases like MongoDB or SQL, version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected, alongside certification in relevant technologies being a plus. Problem-solving, effective communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this field. These skills and qualities enable developers to build robust, scalable applications and collaborate efficiently across the software development lifecycle.

Senior Full Stack Software Engineer - React Native

Phoenix, AZ • Remote

Job description

About the Role

Clever Benefits is building the tech that makes healthcare feel less like a headache. We package telemedicine services into custom-branded mobile apps and build the CRMs that power day-to-day operations for our clients. Our tools support meaningful experiences for the people who rely on them, and we're scaling quickly to meet demand.

We operate in a fast-paced, high-context environment with a lean engineering team that moves quickly and takes full ownership of its work. We care deeply about clarity, real-world impact, and building systems that scale. You won't find layers of red tape here, just a team of smart, mission-driven people solving hard problems together.

The Role

We're hiring a Senior React Native Engineer to own and scale the mobile experiences our clients rely on. Our apps are custom-branded for each client and live in both the App Store and Google Play, so you'll work across a portfolio of releases rather than a single app. You'll take ownership end-to-end, from scoping a feature to shipping it through app review and supporting it in production. As we phase out legacy systems, consolidate codebases, and move toward a service-based architecture, you'll help shape how we build and ship mobile going forward.

In a lean team environment, you'll need to be comfortable identifying the right stakeholders, asking clarifying questions, and simplifying complex problems before diving into solutions. You'll work directly with leadership and clients to understand requirements, push back when needed, and make pragmatic technical decisions that balance speed with quality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take full ownership of mobile features from scoping through delivery, including identifying stakeholders and gathering requirements
  • Own the full release cycle, including versioning, build pipelines, App Store and Google Play submissions, review responses, and rollbacks
  • Build and maintain shared mobile architecture that supports multiple custom-branded client apps without duplicating work
  • Debug across the React Native and native boundary, and keep our apps ahead of iOS and Android platform requirements rather than reacting to deadlines
  • Contribute to system design discussions and help uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, and reliability
  • Participate in code reviews and collaborate with teammates to solve technical challenges
  • Communicate effectively with team members, leadership, and clients to deliver business outcomes

Requirements

Who You Are
  • 4+ years building and shipping production mobile applications, with significant depth in React Native and TypeScript
  • You've personally shipped apps to both the App Store and Google Play and owned the release and review process, not just handed off a build
  • Comfortable working in native code when you need to, including Xcode and Android Studio output, native dependency and SDK issues, and platform-specific bugs
  • Experience with mobile fundamentals like offline behavior, deep linking, push notifications, secure local storage, and performance profiling
  • Solid foundation in the rest of our stack: Node.js, tRPC, MongoDB and/or PostgreSQL, and AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, S3, RDS, CDK)
  • Comfortable working without heavy product management support. You know how to scope work, identify edge cases, and challenge requirements when something doesn't make sense
  • Passionate about system design, code quality, type-safety, and building for long-term maintainability
  • Clear communicator who values collaboration and contributes to a positive, inclusive team culture
  • Proactive, solution-oriented, and able to balance moving quickly with building things the right way
Bonus points for:
  • Strong web-based React front end skills, since we occasionally pull in help across our web apps and internal tools
  • Experience with white-label or multi-tenant mobile apps where one codebase powers many branded builds
  • Experience working in regulated domains such as healthcare
  • Based in or open to relocating to the Phoenix area (future hybrid office option, timeline TBD)

Benefits

  • Health insurance through Redirect Health 100% Employer-sponsored
  • New Apple laptop provided
  • 3 weeks PTO plus 9 Federal holidays
