What is a full stack software engineer?

A full stack software engineer develops all aspects of a software application, from the user interface to the back-end database. As a full stack software engineer, your job duties include gathering customer requirements, writing the code to develop the application, and troubleshooting the application for any issues. The qualifications to pursue a career as a full stack software engineer include an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field and proficiency in a variety of coding languages and frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) development, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like React or Angular), version control (such as Git), databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms is essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be beneficial. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and adaptability are vital soft skills that help engineers navigate complex projects and work effectively in teams. These skills ensure the ability to deliver robust, scalable, and user-friendly applications that meet dynamic business needs.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Software EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often involved in full project lifecycle.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full-stack development teams, startups, and projects requiring versatile developers.Found in teams emphasizing UI/UX, web design, and front-end frameworks.

While both roles require strong JavaScript skills, Full Stack Software Engineers handle both front-end and back-end development, whereas Front End Developers focus solely on the user interface and experience. The choice depends on whether you prefer a broader development scope or specialization in UI design.

How do full stack software engineers typically collaborate with other team members during a development project?

Full Stack Software Engineers often work closely with front-end and back-end developers, UI/UX designers, product managers, and QA testers throughout the software development lifecycle. Collaboration typically involves participating in agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to ensure alignment and progress. They are expected to communicate effectively across disciplines, help troubleshoot issues that span both client and server sides, and contribute to shared documentation. This collaborative environment helps ensure that solutions are cohesive, scalable, and meet user requirements.

Iru is the AI-powered security & IT platform used by the world's fastest-growing companies to secure their users, apps, and devices. Built for the AI era, Iru unifies identity & access, endpoint security & management, and compliance automation-collapsing the stack and giving IT & security time and control back.

Iru is backed by some of the smartest investors in tech-General Catalyst, Tiger Global, Felicis, Greycroft, and First Round Capital. In July 2024, Iru raised $100 million from General Catalyst, valuing the company at $850 million. Iru was named to Forbes' America's Best Startup Employers 2025 list for employee engagement and satisfaction.

The Opportunity

At Iru, we are redefining enterprise IT and security by building a unified, AI-powered device management platform. As a Senior Software Engineer on our IT Products team, you will build the core, high-throughput backend infrastructure that remotely configures, patches, and secures millions of endpoints from macOS and Windows laptops to iOS and Android devices worldwide.

The IT Products teams own the critical, real-time communication pipeline between our platform and the devices themselves. You will tackle complex challenges in distributed systems, handling massive influxes of device telemetry and building automated, event-driven workflows that allow IT admins to manage their entire fleet from a single console. If you want to build deep highly performant systems where your code directly secures and orchestrates enterprise hardware at scale, this is your opportunity.

How You'll Make a Difference Day to Day
  • Build and Maintain Service Architecture: Architect and implement reliable, scalable backend services to support our device management platform, with a heavy focus on backend engineering (~70% of the role).
  • Power Real-Time Device Orchestration: Own and evolve our asynchronous service communication, configuration distribution, and telemetry pipelines using Kafka to handle high-velocity device state changes.
  • Optimize Database Performance: Write clean, high-performance database queries to interact directly with our relational databases, ensure maximum query efficiency, speed, and visibility into device inventories.
  • Leverage Modern Dev Workflows: Lean into AI-assisted development tools to accelerate your workflow, while maintaining a rigorous standard for self-reviewing code so as not to bog down the team's pipeline.
  • Drive Infrastructure Improvements: Partner with the infrastructure team to evolve CI/CD pipelines, agent distribution networks, and service deployment patterns.
  • Mentor and Lead by Example: Lead technical development with knowledge of up-to-date best practices, and guide other engineers through code reviews, architectural discussions, and technical decision-making.
  • Design for Scalability and Resilience: Build systems that handle massive device fleet growth gracefully and are resilient to failure across distributed global environments.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a heavy leaning toward backend web development.
  • Expertise in Python and TypeScript: Strong, professional proficiency in Python and TypeScript is required.
  • Python Framework Experience: Production experience building APIs and services with FastAPI, Django, or Flask.
  • Full-Stack Capability: Comfort or exposure to frontend architecture like React to handle the ~30% frontend needs of the platform's administrative consoles.
  • Experience working with event-driven architectures and message brokers, with Kafka being a strict requirement.
  • Deep understanding of service-oriented architecture, microservices, and handling high-concurrency connections.
  • Pragmatic approach to AI-assisted development (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, etc.), knowing how to use it to move faster, while possessing the senior-level debugging skills to review and validate generated code before it hits peer review.
  • Prior experience in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation.
  • Strong experience with peer code reviews, offering and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Experience with E2E testing systems like Playwright or Selenium.
  • Experience with observability tools including distributed tracing, logging, and monitoring using tools such as DataDog.
  • On-Site Requirement: Ability to work on-site in our Coral Gables office Tuesday through Thursday.
