What does a full stack software engineer intern do?

A Full Stack Software Engineer Intern assists with the development of both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work under the guidance of experienced engineers to write code, debug issues, and help integrate different technologies across the software stack. Typical tasks include building user interfaces, connecting to databases, and testing new features. This role helps interns gain hands-on experience with various programming languages, frameworks, and tools commonly used in software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software engineer intern?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), basic web development concepts, and enrollment in a relevant degree program like computer science. Familiarity with frameworks (like React or Node.js), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms are often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork set standout interns apart. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly to new technologies, and collaborate efficiently in dynamic development environments.

What types of projects and technologies do full stack software engineer interns typically work on during their internship?

Job description

Full-Stack Software Engineer
Location: New York City
Employment Type: Full-time
Experience: New grad to 2 years
Focus: Full-Stack Engineering, AI Coding Tools, Internal Tooling, Healthcare AI
About Our Client
Our client is building at the intersection of healthcare, AI, and applied machine learning.
The company is working on systems that help train and evaluate AI models in realistic healthcare environments. To move faster, they need high-horsepower full-stack engineers who can take execution-heavy engineering work off the ML team's plate so researchers can focus on their highest-value work.
This is an early-career role for someone ambitious, technical, and hungry to ship. The work is not meant for a highly specialized senior engineer. It is designed for a sharp full-stack generalist who can use modern AI coding tools, move quickly, and build real things in a fast-paced startup environment.
About the Role
Our client is hiring a Full-Stack Software Engineer to support two main workstreams.
The first is building near one-to-one replicas of existing healthcare platforms that serve as the foundation for reinforcement learning environments. The second is building internal tools that help the team ship faster, improve workflows, and create more leverage for the ML organization.
This is a strong fit for a new grad or early-career engineer who wants meaningful ownership, enjoys grinding through execution, and is excited to use tools like Claude and Cursor to move faster than a traditional engineer at the same experience level.
What You'll Do
  • Build full-stack replicas of existing healthcare platforms used as the foundation for RL environments
  • Create internal tools that help the team ship faster and reduce execution load on ML engineers
  • Build tooling for demos, workflows, experimentation, and internal operations
  • Work directly with ML engineers to understand what needs to be built and execute quickly
  • Move between environment builds and internal tooling as priorities shift
  • Use modern AI coding tools as a core part of the development workflow
  • Own real product and tooling surface area in a tiny, fast-moving startup
  • Ship practical, useful software quickly without needing every step spelled out
  • Help create leverage for the research team by taking engineering execution off their plate

What We're Looking For
  • New grad to roughly 2 years of professional engineering experience
  • Strong full-stack generalist with high horsepower and strong execution speed
  • Experience building real projects, internal tools, automations, or production software
  • Fluency with modern AI coding tools such as Claude, Cursor, or similar platforms
  • Strong ability to learn quickly and figure things out independently
  • Tooling mindset and curiosity around what is newly possible with AI-assisted development
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, early-stage startup environment
  • Strong ownership, urgency, and willingness to grind through execution-heavy work
  • Ability to collaborate closely with ML engineers and technical founders
  • Interest in healthcare, AI, reinforcement learning, or research infrastructure

Nice to Have
  • Experience building internal tooling, automations, or developer productivity tools
  • Personal projects or demos that show strong full-stack ability
  • Experience shipping software used by others, either in production or in a serious project environment
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the latest AI coding tools and agentic development workflows
  • Personal or mission-driven connection to healthcare

Who Will Thrive Here
  • An ambitious new grad who wants to ship fast and earn real ownership early
  • A full-stack generalist who uses AI tooling to move faster than their experience level suggests
  • Someone who enjoys building practical tools that unblock others
  • A builder who is energized by helping researchers and ML engineers move faster
  • Someone who wants to work hard, learn quickly, and build real systems in a tiny startup environment
  • A mission-driven engineer excited by the opportunity to improve healthcare through AI

Why This Opportunity
  • Join a tiny, fast-moving healthcare AI startup early
  • Own meaningful engineering work from the beginning of your career
  • Work directly with ML engineers and founders
  • Build tools that create real leverage for a research team
  • Use AI coding tools as a core part of how work gets done
  • Get broad exposure across full-stack engineering, healthcare workflows, tooling, and RL environments
  • Step into a role where speed, curiosity, and ownership matter more than years of experience
