What is a full stack Java developer?

A Full Stack Java Developer is a software professional skilled in both front-end and back-end development using Java technologies. They are proficient in building complete web applications, handling everything from designing user interfaces and user experiences to managing databases and server-side logic. Typically, they work with frameworks like Spring Boot for the backend and technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, ensuring seamless integration between the two. Full Stack Java Developers are valued for their versatility and ability to manage all aspects of the software development process.

What is a full stack Java developer?

A full stack Java developer is a web developer that uses the Java language in the development of the entire technology stack of a web-based application. The job duties of a full stack Java developer are to create both front-end components, such as user interfaces and back-end components, such as application code and databases. As a full stack Java developer, you must understand how the entire technology stack functions as a whole and have deep expertise of each component. Java is a computer programming language that has become one of the most popular for web application development.

What are the typical challenges full stack Java developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Java Developers often collaborate with front-end designers, back-end engineers, and QA specialists, which can lead to challenges in aligning technical requirements, timelines, and coding standards. Navigating different priorities and communication styles is common, especially when integrating new features or resolving bugs that span both client and server sides. Success in this environment requires flexibility, proactive communication, and a willingness to quickly adapt to shifting project needs or technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack Java developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Java Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java, front-end frameworks (such as Angular or React), back-end technologies, and a solid understanding of databases, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Maven or Gradle, and knowledge of Spring Boot or similar frameworks are typically required, along with relevant certifications. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to deliver robust, user-friendly applications and to collaborate efficiently across the software development lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deliver secure, high-performing enterprise applications and services.

  • Partner with product owners, architects, and engineers to translate business needs into technical solutions, and lead end-to-end delivery of features.

  • Lead code reviews, clarify requirements, explain system flows, and coach junior engineers while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Job description

Your opportunity

At Schwab, you're empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us challenge the status quo and transform the finance industry together. We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).

As a Senior Full Stack Java Developer, you will design, build, and deliver secure, high-performing enterprise applications and services that power critical business capabilities and elevate the client’s experience. You will partner closely with product owners, architects, business partners, and fellow engineers to translate complex business needs into scalable technical solutions—owning your work from analysis and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support. In this senior individual contributor role, you will lead end-to-end delivery of features and services, guide technical direction on items of moderate-to-high complexity, decompose narratives into well-scoped work, and champion engineering excellence through clean code, secure coding practices, automated testing, and reliable CI/CD delivery. You will also serve as a technical mentor—leading code reviews, clarifying requirements, explaining end-to-end system flows, and coaching junior engineers—while collaborating with UX experts, delivery managers, and scrum leaders to shape thoughtful designs, providing sizing estimates, identify risks early, and establish mitigation plans. A meaningful part of your work will involve leveraging GenAI coding assistants (such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code) across the SDLC—implementation, refactoring, unit testing, code reviews, scripting/automation, troubleshooting, and documentation—while applying strong engineering judgment, validation, and prompt engineering practices to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and shape team-level standards for AI-assisted development. Above all, you are a curious, collaborative engineer who thrives in Agile/Scrum environments, adapts quickly to new technologies, and delivers outcomes that meaningfully move the business forward

What you have

What You Have

To help us fulfill our promise of challenging the status quo, you should have:

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on software development experience delivering scalable, enterprise-grade Java applications and services
  • 8+ years of hands-on Front-end design and development experience, preferably using Angular or React.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of professional-level Java web and service development experience with Java/Spring and Spring Boot
  • 6+ years of experience developing Microservices and REST APIs, with working knowledge of messaging frameworks such as Kafka
  • 6+ years of professional-level front-end experience with HTML, JSP, NPM/webpack build tooling, and Angular
  • 5+ years of experience with CI/CD tools such as Bitbucket, Bamboo, Jenkins, or GitHub, applied to build, test, and deployment automation
  • 5+ years of experience participating as a member of a scrum team in an Agile environment, contributing to sprint planning, refinement, reviews, retrospectives, and PI planning
  • 4+ years of experience leading technical teams and partnering with architects and product teams to create comprehensive designs and roadmaps for complex systems
  • Demonstrated exposure to, or hands-on experience with, GenAI coding assistants used across day-to-day engineering workflows in the SDLC—implementation, refactoring, unit testing, regression support, code reviews, scripting/automation, troubleshooting, and documentation—while applying engineering judgment and validation; practical familiarity with tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code is expected
  • Working knowledge of agentic workflows, spec-driven development (translating low-level design artifacts such as class structures, API contracts, and data models into structured specs that guide AI-assisted implementation), and custom instructions and prompt engineering, with the ability to establish team-level practices for effective AI-assisted development
  • Strong grasp of secure coding practices and familiarity with application security concepts and tools
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, and to build partnerships across multiple functions and levels within an organization

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud-native application development and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Playwright) and agentic development patterns to improve engineering efficiency and software delivery.
  • Hands-on experience with application performance engineering, observability, monitoring, and troubleshooting using tools such as AppDynamics, Splunk, Grafana, or PCF Metrics.
  • Familiarity with modern software engineering practices, including Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), and related automation frameworks such as Cucumber and Selenium.
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) certification or equivalent cloud certification preferred.
