A Full Stack Java Developer is a software professional skilled in both front-end and back-end development using Java technologies. They are proficient in building complete web applications, handling everything from designing user interfaces and user experiences to managing databases and server-side logic. Typically, they work with frameworks like Spring Boot for the backend and technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, ensuring seamless integration between the two. Full Stack Java Developers are valued for their versatility and ability to manage all aspects of the software development process.

What is a full stack Java developer?

A full stack Java developer is a web developer that uses the Java language in the development of the entire technology stack of a web-based application. The job duties of a full stack Java developer are to create both front-end components, such as user interfaces and back-end components, such as application code and databases. As a full stack Java developer, you must understand how the entire technology stack functions as a whole and have deep expertise of each component. Java is a computer programming language that has become one of the most popular for web application development.

What are the typical challenges full stack Java developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Java Developers often collaborate with front-end designers, back-end engineers, and QA specialists, which can lead to challenges in aligning technical requirements, timelines, and coding standards. Navigating different priorities and communication styles is common, especially when integrating new features or resolving bugs that span both client and server sides. Success in this environment requires flexibility, proactive communication, and a willingness to quickly adapt to shifting project needs or technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack Java developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Java Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java, front-end frameworks (such as Angular or React), back-end technologies, and a solid understanding of databases, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Maven or Gradle, and knowledge of Spring Boot or similar frameworks are typically required, along with relevant certifications. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to deliver robust, user-friendly applications and to collaborate efficiently across the software development lifecycle.

From fulfilling a single patient’s request for their medical records to powering the AI revolution in healthcare, Datavanters are building the future of how data is connected and used to improve health.

By joining Datavant today, you’re stepping onto a driven and highly collaborative team that is passionate about creating transformative change in healthcare.

The Role

At Datavant, we value Engineers who solve problems, build impactful products, and deeply understand the principles and practices of software engineering. As a Senior Full Stack Engineer, you will play a key role in growing our healthcare data ecosystem and delivering innovative solutions that help connect and activate health data across the industry.

Don't know our exact tech stack? That's okay. We view technology as a means to solving problems and creating value for customers. We care more about strong engineering fundamentals, product thinking, and the ability to learn than experience with any specific technology. You'll work across the stack, contributing to everything from intuitive user experiences to scalable backend systems and data platforms. You'll also help shape technical direction, mentor teammates, and influence how we build.

You’ll begin meaningful work from day one in a highly impactful role with significant ownership and opportunities for growth.

What You’ll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain full-stack applications that power Datavant's healthcare data ecosystem

  • Deliver exceptional user experiences by partnering closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers

  • Develop scalable frontend applications, backend services, APIs, and data-driven solutions that support millions of healthcare records and transactions

  • Guide technical design decisions and help establish architecture patterns that enable long-term scalability and maintainability

  • Mentor engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and continuous learning

  • Own substantial projects end-to-end, from technical design through implementation, deployment, and ongoing operation

  • Drive innovation and deliver valuable solutions that improve outcomes for healthcare organizations and patients

  • Share your expertise with the engineering community through technical discussions, mentorship, and contributions to our engineering blog

Tech Stack You’ll Work With

Your work will span Datavant’s core platform technologies, including:

  • Backend: Python, Go, Java; microservices; REST and GraphQL

  • Frontend: TypeScript, React, Next.js

  • Infrastructure & Cloud: AWS (EC2, S3, IAM, Lambda), Docker, Kubernetes; IaC tools

  • Data: Snowflake, Spark, SQL; S3 for raw data

  • ETL & Pipelines: Airflow/Glue

  • Streaming: Kafka or Kinesis

  • Observability: DataDog, Grafana, CloudWatch

  • Security: OAuth2/SAML, encryption, tokenization

What You Bring
  • 8+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production software systems

  • Strong full-stack engineering experience, including modern frontend development and backend services

  • Experience building customer-facing applications using technologies such as React, TypeScript, and modern web frameworks

  • Experience designing and developing scalable APIs, distributed systems, and cloud-native applications

  • Ability to write high-quality, maintainable code, perform thoughtful code reviews, and drive engineering best practices

  • Demonstrated experience leading projects from concept to production and successfully navigating complex technical challenges

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, and design teams

  • Passion for mentoring other engineers and elevating the technical capabilities of the team

  • Excitement, passion, and curiosity about our mission of connecting the world's health data and improving patient outcomes

Leadership Qualities & Mindset
  • Model accountability and ownership in team projects.

  • Encourage collaboration and technical learning across peers.

  • Maintain curiosity for both technical and business context.

  • Communicate effectively across engineering and product.

  • Demonstrate resilience and adaptability in problem-solving.

Core Value Expectations
  • Earn trust through reliable delivery and proactive risk communication.

  • Obsess over customers by shaping requirements and ensuring system excellence.

  • Prioritize growth over comfort through ongoing architectural development.

  • Win as a team by mentoring, aligning stakeholders, and enabling others.

  • Rise to the challenge by solving complex problems with speed and rigor.
