What is a full stack engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do full stack engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer

Job description

Compensation: $150,000 - $170,000/yearย

Team & Position Details:ย

As a Senior Full Stack Engineer, you will be an integral part of our engineering team that builds and maintains Virtru's suite of digital privacy products - tools that more than 6,000 organizations rely on to protect and control sensitive data wherever it lives, moves, or is shared. This role is critical to the team because we need a seasoned, full-stack engineer who can own complex problems end-to-end, from writing elegant production-quality code to keeping our platform running reliably at scale. The impact this team makes is real and meaningful: every line of code contributes directly to protecting people's data and advancing a future where privacy is the default, not the exception.

As a Senior Full Stack Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

Core Responsibilities:

  • Write and ship elegant, production-quality JavaScript across both the front and backend of Virtru's digital privacy products using frameworks and toolchains such as React
  • Develop and contribute to backend services and APIs using Go (Golang), building performant and scalable components that power Virtru's core data protection platform
  • Deploy and operate a highly available, scalable Enterprise SaaS application on AWS in a DevOps environment, ensuring the platform is up and running smoothly 24/7
  • Take full ownership of the entire application lifecycle - from code and automated testing (unit, integration, Selenium, canaries) to deployment and production operations including on-call rotations via PagerDuty

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate strong, working knowledge of software design patterns and apply them thoughtfully to solve complex engineering problems
  • Collaborate across a fast-paced environment, touching multiple projects and products simultaneously
  • Partner with the product team to identify issues, investigate root causes, and propose clear solutions and next steps (Leadership)
  • Foster a team environment where members communicate efficiently, collaborate effectively, and have a clear growth path for their technical skills; provide constructive, actionable feedback to teammates (Mentorship)
  • Actively seek out mentoring opportunities to build team redundancy and backfill capability
  • Proactively share information, solicit feedback, and facilitate communication for multiple stakeholders including non-technical audiences (Communication)
  • Deliver medium-to-large tasks that span multiple systems, plan and estimate timelines, handle communication around work progression, and manage risk and uncertainty within your scope of work (Delivery/Project Management)
  • Ensure tasks are properly sized, prioritized, and that commitments are realistic; push back on work that is not valuable to the engineering team
  • Develop a thorough understanding of your team's domain and how it contributes to Virtru's overall business strategy, while also building familiarity with adjacent teams' domains (Strategy/Business Impact)

Skills that will help you thrive in this role:

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience developing with JavaScript, including Node.js and/or frameworks/toolchains such as React
  • Proficiency utilizing Go (Golang) for building efficient, scalable backend services and APIs
  • Proven experience deploying and operating a highly available, scalable Enterprise SaaS application in a DevOps environment
  • Strong, demonstrable understanding of software design patterns
  • Experience building and deploying applications using AWS or GCP cloud infrastructure
  • Experience using Docker to accelerate all aspects of the development lifecycle (dev, test, deployment)
  • Experience with Agentic AI workflows and tooling

Virtruvian qualities that will set you up for success:

  • Thinking outside of the box to respectfully challenge your teammates and managers in the pursuit of excellence
  • Strong sense of urgency with an action-oriented mindset
  • Able to collaborate and adapt to shifting priorities as business needs evolve
  • Comfortable with asynchronous communication including slack, email, zoom, etc.
