What is a full stack engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do full stack engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.

Job description

Sr. Full Stack Engineer (Backend)
Salary Range: $150,000 - $200,000 annually
This range reflects the base salary VibeIQ expects to pay for this role. Actual offers may vary based on the candidate's experience and skillsPOSITION SUMMARY
We're looking for a Sr. Full Stack Engineer to join the Core Apps team. Core Apps builds the products our customers use every day: the collaboration board, the planning grid, and the showcases they share with partners and buyers. We also own the services and shared libraries behind them, covering line planning, item search, assortments, documents, presentations and previews, projects, custom entities, and AI-assisted line and item generation.
This is a true full stack team, and this role leans backend. You'll own API services across the domain, from the data model and service architecture through the AWS infrastructure they run on. You'll also work in the Angular apps that consume those services. This is a hybrid role based in Boston with 2 days per week in office.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Design, build, and maintain the backend services behind our core apps.
  • Run those services on AWS and stay accountable for their reliability, performance, observability, and cost.
  • Build AI-assisted generation features, such as generating lines and items from customer data, along with the services that support them.
  • Own features end to end, from technical design through deployment and monitoring, including the Angular work when the feature calls for it.
  • Model data for large customer catalogs and multi-tenant workloads, and keep it fast as those catalogs grow.
  • Work with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define what we build, and bring your own ideas to that conversation.
  • Diagnose and fix production issues across distributed systems.
  • Improve how we work: code quality, code review, continuous integration, and testing.
  • Mentor other engineers, lead design reviews, and raise the technical bar on the team.
  • Collaborate with teams across VibeIQ to improve our product, architecture, and engineering practices.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  1. 5+ years building and running production backend services, TypeScript and Node.js preferred.
  2. Hands-on AWS depth across Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, and event-driven services such as SQS and SNS. You've operated what you built.
  3. A track record of API design and data modeling in reliable, high-traffic systems.
  4. Working proficiency in a modern frontend framework, Angular preferred or React.
  5. Strong debugging skills in distributed systems. You can research a problem, weigh the options, and design a fix that spans the stack.
  6. Clear technical writing: design docs, runbooks, and decisions others can act on without follow-up.
  7. Proactive communication. You care about learning, growing, and helping others do the same.
  8. Startup mentality: comfort with ownership, fast iteration, and wearing multiple hats
NICE TO HAVE
  1. Domain experience in retail, apparel, or consumer products: line planning, assortments, merchandising, or PLM.
  2. Experience shipping LLM-backed product features, including prompt design, evaluation, and cost and latency tradeoffs.
  3. Familiarity with SaaS integrations such as PLM, DAM, PIM, or ERP systems.
  4. Experience with real-time sync, WebSockets, or collaborative editing.
  5. Depth in Angular, NgRx/RxJS, or browser performance work.
  6. Experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch at scale.
  7. Experience with automated testing and testable system design.
  8. Experience managing cloud spend.
  9. An interest in security.
  10. A strong intuition for UX.
WHY JOIN US
  1. Transform how companies work by empowering the collaboration behind every great product
  2. Work on challenging, high-impact projects with enterprise clients.
  3. Collaborate with top talent in a dynamic, growth-oriented company.
  4. Enjoy flexibility, autonomy, and opportunities for career advancement.
  5. Be part of a Professional Services team that values innovation, customer success, and continuous learning.
