Job description

Staff BESS Electrical Design Engineer (EPC) — Utility-Scale Storage, Full Ownership

Carson City, NV | Full-Time | $150,000 – $195,000

The Opportunity

Grid-scale batteries are rewriting how America moves energy — and someone has to design the systems that make them work. Our client, a fast-growing clean energy innovator, is hiring a Staff BESS Electrical Design Engineer to lead utility-scale lithium-ion storage projects end to end. You'll serve as both Electrical Engineer of Record and the company's internal storage SME, owning everything from system sizing and AC/DC architecture to interconnection and commissioning.

Why You'll Love It

  • The full stack of storage: MV transformers, inverters, DC combiners, energy managers, battery modules — you design how it all connects
  • Recognized expertise: The internal authority on BESS technology, codes, and trends
  • Forward-looking R&D: Feasibility work on MV-DC distribution for hybrid energy integration
  • Tahoe-adjacent living: Carson City lifestyle with zero state income tax

What You'll Do

  • Lead utility-scale BESS electrical engineering from concept (sizing, layout) through construction
  • Design AC and DC electrical systems; specify and procure long-lead AC equipment
  • Develop schematics, single-lines, wiring diagrams, raceway and grounding plans, and protection strategies
  • Specify breakers, contactors, fuses, disconnects, EPO, and metering
  • Interface with utilities and ISO/RTOs for interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance
  • Lead code compliance — NEC 705/706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, NFPA 855 — and brief internal teams
  • Run short circuit, load flow, arc flash, and coordination studies across AC and DC systems
  • Serve as Electrical Engineer of Record on assigned projects
  • Coordinate multi-discipline teams (civil, structural, fire & life safety, SCADA/telecom, geotech) into complete IFC packages
  • Support construction — RFIs, submittals, change orders, inspections — through commissioning
  • Prepare estimates and schedules, QA/QC designs, mentor junior engineers, and build design standards

What You'll Bring

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering (ABET)
  • Active PE (Nevada or reciprocity-eligible); NV and SC licensure within 2 months of start
  • 5+ years in solar, energy storage, or microgrids, with 3+ in BESS design and deployment
  • Proven BESS interconnection and regulatory compliance track record
  • SME-level knowledge of NEC 705/706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, NFPA 855
  • Advanced proficiency: HOMER (or similar), ETAP/SKM, AutoCAD/Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam
  • Bonus points: PSSE/PSLF, PSCAD, SEL relay settings, HVDC design
  • Deep grasp of peak shaving, load shifting, demand response, and frequency response

Storage is the future of the grid. Come design it. Apply today.
