What is a full stack engineer intern?

Full Stack Engineer Interns are students or recent graduates who assist in developing both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work under the guidance of experienced engineers to gain hands-on experience with programming languages, frameworks, and tools used throughout the software development lifecycle. Their responsibilities often include writing code, testing applications, fixing bugs, and collaborating with teams to deliver functional software. Through this internship, they develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of how web systems work end-to-end.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack engineer intern?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and at least one backend language, often supported by coursework or relevant project experience. Familiarity with frameworks such as React or Angular, backend systems like Node.js or Django, version control (Git), and basic database management is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns stand out in fast-paced development teams. These skills and qualities are essential for contributing to real-world projects, collaborating effectively, and accelerating professional growth in a technical environment.

What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with as a full stack engineer intern?

As a Full Stack Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects ranging from building user interfaces with front-end frameworks like React or Angular to developing backend services using technologies such as Node.js, Python, or Java. Interns often assist with integrating APIs, database management, and testing features in both development and production environments. You'll likely collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and other developers, gaining exposure to the complete software development lifecycle. This hands-on experience is designed to help you build practical skills and contribute meaningful code to real applications.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer Intern vs Software Developer Intern?

Trunk Tools, Inc.

Job description

At Trunk Tools, we’re the leading AI company revolutionizing construction, the second-largest industry on earth. We recently raised a $40M Series B led by Insight Partners, bringing our total funding to $70M from top-tier investors including Redpoint and Innovation Endeavors. This new round is fueling our next phase of growth as we scale AI agents across the jobsite.

Our mission is to build the future of construction through intelligent automation. Despite being a $13+ trillion industry, construction still runs largely on analog processes, we’re changing that by embedding AI directly into field operations.

Founded by builders and technologists (Stanford, MIT), our team has delivered software used by over 140,000 field professionals, impacting millions of users and contributing to $10B+ in built projects. Many of us come from the field ourselves, giving us a deep understanding of the industry’s unique challenges.

After years of building the “brain” of construction, we’re now launching production-ready AI agents, starting with intelligent document processing and Q&A, and rapidly expanding into core operational workflows. Our team has doubled in the past year, and with 100+ employees (50+ engineers), we’re scaling fast and entering a period of hypergrowth. This is a rare opportunity to join at an inflection point.

Our full-stack engineers work within cross-functional feature squads to create the capabilities our customers leverage every day. This position will work closely with product, design, business stakeholders, and colleagues across the engineering org to bring our product roadmap to life.

What you will do and achieve:
  • Create the next generation of product experience: You will build new features and expand existing capabilities across the Trunk Tools product platform, and get deeply hands-on with our core LLM-enabled agentic product experience. This isn’t yet another CRUD build! We’re creating the technology to unlock a new paradigm in how users interact with an app, that leverages the power of language models from the ground up.

  • Own capabilities end-to-end: We believe in individual ownership at Trunk Tools. As a full-stack engineer on one of our feature squads, you'll drive new capabilities from concept to production — collaborating with product and design to shape what gets built, writing code across the stack, and working directly with customer success as we deploy and scale new features with real users.

  • Collaborate closely with machine learning/vision engineers, LLM domain experts, and our integrations team: Our platform relies on complex integrations with third-party systems, extensive data processing capabilities, and a cutting-edge agentic layer. All of this technology comes together in our user-facing product: as you develop and deploy new capabilities, you’ll work in a highly collaborative and cross-functional way.

  • Constantly improve technical reliability and ability to scale: you’ll iterate on our backend architecture to support the growing needs of thousands of users, making sure our systems are built to scale as we grow.

  • Strategic participation: In this role you’ll help inform the architecture, practices, and tools you’ll use every day to shape what we build, and how.

Who you are:
  • Demonstrable past experience in one or more leveraged, high-output full-stack engineering roles

  • Highly proficient in TypeScript and full-stack development across backend and frontend, with experience in our technical stack (Node + Express + React)

  • You have experience architecting systems, designing data schemas, and are comfortable with both relational and non-relational databases

  • You have previous experience shipping products to users, and enjoy the pace of a fast-moving startup environment

  • You’re energized by user impact and how high-quality engineering can be a multiplier – you care deeply about both what ships and how it’s built.

Interviewing at Trunk

Our interview process is designed to help us assess whether candidates would be a good fit for our company and open roles, as well as help candidates understand what it’s like to work on our team. We focus holistically on candidates’ alignment with our core values and their ability to work and operate under a high standard of excellence. All our interviews are performed remotely via Zoom.

(1) Conversation with the hiring manager

The first step of our interview process is an initial conversation with the hiring Engineering Manager. This session will focus on your background, skills, and relevant work history. We’ll discuss the projects and outcomes you’ve driven in your prior roles. As part of this conversation, we’ll tell you more about TrunkTools, expectations for the role, and leave ample time for your own questions.

(2) Technical screen

In this round, you’ll meet with a senior engineer on our team to review, understand, and refactor a small section of TypeScript code. You will screenshare your work from your own laptop. Please prepare by having Docker and your preferred code editor set up for this session.

While we are in the business of applied AI and use LLM-equipped coding tools extensively internally, we still expect our software engineers to know how to code. We place a high value on candidates’ understanding of programming fundamentals, so during this and all other technical screens, we will ask you to write your own code (instead of relying on an agent).

(3) Technical panels

Following our technical screen, we have candidates attend two separate panel interview sessions: a full-stack interview and a system design exercise. Both sessions will be attended by a panel of two senior engineers.

Our full-stack interview covers candidate’s familiarity with implementing features across the breadth of a TypeScript and Express codebase. We’ll ask you to work through implementation of a small feature end-to-end, starting from a React component, handling state management, API calls, backend controller and service changes, and interaction with a database.

In the system design exercise, we’ll ask candidates to diagram an architecture for a hypothetical eCommerce application using a shared Zoom whiteboard. We’ll be focused on assessing the candidate’s broad familiarity with how web applications are structured and built.

(4) Meet with the CTO

As a last step in our process before the offer phase, we schedule a short conversation with our CTO. This session is more informal, covering shared alignment, fit, and answering any remaining questions about TrunkTools or engineering culture.
