What is a full stack engineer intern?

Full Stack Engineer Interns are students or recent graduates who assist in developing both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work under the guidance of experienced engineers to gain hands-on experience with programming languages, frameworks, and tools used throughout the software development lifecycle. Their responsibilities often include writing code, testing applications, fixing bugs, and collaborating with teams to deliver functional software. Through this internship, they develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of how web systems work end-to-end.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack engineer intern?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and at least one backend language, often supported by coursework or relevant project experience. Familiarity with frameworks such as React or Angular, backend systems like Node.js or Django, version control (Git), and basic database management is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns stand out in fast-paced development teams. These skills and qualities are essential for contributing to real-world projects, collaborating effectively, and accelerating professional growth in a technical environment.

What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with as a full stack engineer intern?

As a Full Stack Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects ranging from building user interfaces with front-end frameworks like React or Angular to developing backend services using technologies such as Node.js, Python, or Java. Interns often assist with integrating APIs, database management, and testing features in both development and production environments. You'll likely collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and other developers, gaining exposure to the complete software development lifecycle. This hands-on experience is designed to help you build practical skills and contribute meaningful code to real applications.

Overview

Carbon Direct is hiring a Staff Full Stack Engineer to help build and scale the systems our customers rely on to overcome their carbon, climate strategy, and energy challenges. You'll work across the stack and company, partnering with product, science, and business teams to put AI-augmented software to work for our clients. You'll own the impact of what you ship across its full lifecycle, taking features through discovery, prototyping, launch, iteration, hardening, and scaled adoption. You'll build web applications, shipping both the customer-facing features and the internal capabilities our teams depend on. You'll refine vague requirements into working systems and ship them to production, operating at pace in an ISO 27001 and SOC 2 compliant environment where access control, data protection, and auditability are considered from the first commit.

What you'll do
  • Design, build, and deploy full-stack features end-to-end.
  • Build systems from the ground up and grow the product surface area.
  • Prototype quickly to test hypotheses, deciding what to rework and what to discard.
  • Harden validated prototypes, taking them to enterprise-scale.
  • Make sound architectural decisions with limited precedent.
  • Ship code to production regularly, owning its quality and reliability.
  • Shape engineering practices and technical direction as an early, senior voice.
  • Support the developer experience for AI-empowered contributors from non-engineering backgrounds.
What we're looking for
  • Significant professional experience as a full-stack engineer, with the depth to work confidently across front-end, back-end, databases, and deployment.
  • A track record of building systems from scratch and operating them at scale, with the judgment to make sound tradeoffs in multi-layer distributed systems.
  • An innovator who uses agentic engineering tools in their daily workflow and has deployed AI-augmented software systems to production.
  • A self-starter who is comfortable with ambiguity, able to scope problems, and biased toward shipping viable solutions over waiting for perfect specs.
  • Able to hit the ground running and contribute within days, not weeks.
  • Strong product instincts and commercial awareness.
  • You care about what you're building and why, not just how.
  • A team player who collaborates effectively with design partners, product managers, scientists, and business stakeholders, translating their needs into technical solutions.
  • Experience working in carbon, climate, or energy is a strong plus.
  • Bonus points for Experience building or operating in a regulated environment (ISO 27001, SOC 2, or similar).
  • Experience building developer platforms, internal tooling, or guardrails that let non-specialists contribute code safely.
Why Carbon Direct

You'll join a mission-driven company where you can apply your skills to one of the most consequential problems of our time, with the agency and autonomy to build systems that don't yet exist and the responsibility to see them through to production.
