What is the difference between Full Stack Development vs Front End Development?

AspectFull Stack DevelopmentFront End Development
Primary FocusBoth client-side and server-side developmentClient-side (user interface and experience)
Required SkillsHTML, CSS, JavaScript, backend languages (e.g., Node.js, Python), databasesHTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks like React or Angular
Work EnvironmentInvolves working on entire application stack, often in full project rolesFocuses on designing and implementing user interfaces
Common UsageDeveloping complete web applicationsEnhancing user experience and interface design

Full Stack Developers have a broader skill set covering both front-end and back-end development, enabling them to build complete applications. Front End Developers specialize in creating engaging user interfaces. While both roles require knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, Full Stack Developers also work with server-side technologies and databases, making them versatile in full project development.

Is full stack developer a good career?

A full stack developer is a versatile role that involves working with both front-end and back-end technologies, often requiring knowledge of programming languages, frameworks, and databases. It is considered a strong career choice due to high demand, competitive salaries, and opportunities for growth in various industries. Continuous learning and adapting to new tools are important for success in this field.

Is full stack developer still in demand?

Full stack developers remain in high demand due to their ability to work on both front-end and back-end development, with skills in frameworks like React, Angular, and Node.js. The role is essential in many industries, and demand is expected to grow as companies continue to prioritize digital transformation and full technology stacks.

What are the jobs of a full stack developer?

A full stack developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work with languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side technologies, often using frameworks and databases. Full stack developers also troubleshoot issues, optimize performance, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver complete software solutions.

What does a full stack developer do?

A full stack developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work with languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side technologies, often using frameworks and tools such as React, Node.js, and databases. PDF Solutions

Vancouver, BC

Full-time

Job description

Overview

PDF Solutions is redefining the way the semiconductor industry approaches data, analytics, and experience design. As part of our journey, we’re building Next gen platform — a modern, human-centered analytics platform. We believe design systems aren’t just about consistency — they’re about scalability, collaboration, and performance.

Role Summary

This Full Stack Developer owns the ongoing development and maintenance of the Sapience® Manufacturing Hub enterprise (SMHe) product — a cloud-native platform that unifies manufacturing, shop-floor, and process data into enterprise business systems. They will be responsible for building and maintaining SMHe's own back-end services in Java and Spring Boot (microservices, REST APIs, data access against Oracle and Cassandra, Kafka-based messaging), the customer-facing SMHe web UI, the security and IAM layer, and observability — then shipping it all on Kubernetes via Helm across cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped environments. The developer delivers the platform features customers depend on, such as custom monitoring dashboards and end-to-end certificate management.

Equally important is keeping the product healthy over its lifecycle: fixing defects, refactoring, raising test coverage, hardening security, and guaranteeing upgrade safety and backup/restore across releases. The role calls for solid grasp of the platform's architecture — high-availability and disaster-recovery topologies, RBAC, and PKI/TLS — and proven agentic development skills, meaning fluency with AI coding agents to accelerate and improve delivery, backed by concrete evidence (repos, PRs, before/after metrics). Familiarity with Apache Camel and the Karavan visual designer is a plus, but it is supporting context rather than the core of the role.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain SMHe's back-end services and microservices in Java and Spring Boot — REST APIs, business logic, scheduled jobs, and service-to-service integration.
  • Build full-stack product features end to end, spanning back-end services and the SMHe web UI, including customer-facing monitoring dashboards (Grafana), panel thresholds, and alerting.
  • Enable logging and auditing within the product, internally and through integration with entrerprise solutions such as splunk or Dynatrace. Use and management of Elastic/Opensearch to gather and analyze data.
  • Implement persistence and data access against Oracle (RAC) and Cassandra using Spring Data / JPA and appropriate drivers, ensuring data integrity, migrations, and upgrade-safe schemas.
  • Integrate Kafka-based messaging through Spring (producers, consumers, serialization, and error handling) for event-driven product capabilities.
  • Maintain product quality across releases: triage and fix defects, refactor, raise unit and integration test coverage, perform code reviews, and manage technical debt.
  • Build security into the the product: Spring Security / OAuth2 / OIDC / JWT integration with SMHe IAM (Keycloak), fine-grained RBAC, and end-to-end TLS/PKI — corporate-CA certificates, Java trust stores, Kubernetes TLS secrets, NGINX ingress, mutual TLS, and certificate rotation/revocation (CRL/OCSP).
  • Code with security in mind: develop and review code for best practices, respond swiftly to change or update code, libraries and dependencies to address CVEs.
  • Guarantee persistence, upgrade safety, and backup/restore for customer-managed artifacts (dashboards, thresholds, alerts, certificates) across pod restarts and version upgrades.
  • Containerize and ship services with Docker, Helm, and Kubernetes; instrument with Micrometer / Spring Boot Actuator to expose Prometheus metrics and Grafana dashboards; support cloud, on-prem, and air-gapped builds.
  • Manage source control in Git and contribute to CI/CD pipelines: branch, build, deploy, roll back, and version product releases.
  • Demonstrate agentic development skills by using AI coding agents to implement, refactor, test, and document features, with evidence of measurable productivity and quality gains.
  • Build agentic and automated capabilities into the product where they add value — self-service workflows and automated monitoring, alerting, and remediation.
  • Author developer and operator documentation, and collaborate with support teams and customer admins to reproduce and resolve product- and platform-level issues.

Qualifications

Must-Have Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience
  • Strong Java (17+) and Spring Boot — building and maintaining production microservices and REST APIs.
  • Spring ecosystem depth: Spring Data / JPA, Spring Security, and Spring for Kafka.
  • Relational and NoSQL persistence — Oracle (SQL, schema/migration design) and Cassandra (data modeling, drivers).
  • Event-driven development with Apache Kafka (producers, consumers, serialization, error handling).
  • Front-end / full-stack web development for the SMHe UI (modern JavaScript/TypeScript SPA; specific framework per the codebase).
  • Containerization and orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.
  • Security engineering: OAuth2 / OIDC / JWT, RBAC, and identity integration with Keycloak (SMHe IAM); TLS/PKI fundamentals including corporate-CA certificates, Java truststores, and certificate lifecycle.
  • Observability instrumentation with Micrometer / Spring Boot Actuator, Prometheus, and Grafana.
  • Git-based source control and CI/CD pipeline contribution.
  • Proven agentic development skills with Claude Code or Cursor — demonstrated, hands-on use of AI coding agents to implement, refactor, test, and document software, with concrete evidence (repositories, pull requests, or before/after productivity metrics).
  • Solid grasp of distributed-systems architecture: high availability, replication, and upgrade-safe, backup/restore-friendly design.

Nice to Have

  • Semiconductor or Manufacturing industry experience preferred
  • Apache Camel and the Karavan low-code visual designer.
  • Infrastructure automation with Ansible.
  • Experience with air-gapped or regulated/enterprise PKI deployments.
