What is a full stack development intern?

A Full Stack Development Intern is a student or recent graduate who assists with building both the front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) components of web applications. They typically work under the supervision of experienced developers to learn and contribute to projects using various programming languages and frameworks. Responsibilities may include writing code, debugging, testing, and collaborating with design and development teams. This internship provides practical experience in the entire web development process and helps prepare interns for a career as a full stack developer.

What kinds of projects and technologies does a full stack development intern typically work on during their internship?

Full Stack Development Interns often contribute to both front-end and back-end features of web applications, working with frameworks like React or Angular for the user interface and Node.js, Python, or Java for server-side logic. Interns may be assigned tasks such as building new components, fixing bugs, writing APIs, or assisting with database integration. It's common to collaborate closely with designers, senior developers, and QA testers in an agile environment, gaining exposure to the entire software development lifecycle. This hands-on experience helps interns understand how different technologies interact and prepares them for more advanced roles in the future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack development intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Development Intern, you need foundational knowledge of front-end and back-end programming languages such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and at least one server-side framework, alongside a relevant academic background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms is often expected, and experience with tools like React, Node.js, or Docker can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help interns collaborate within teams and learn quickly in dynamic environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for efficiently contributing to diverse development tasks and succeeding in fast-paced tech teams.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Full-Stack Developer to join a Risk Consulting team supporting the development, migration, and enhancement of client-facing technology and custom data analytics solutions.

This position will design, develop, test, and maintain full-stack applications using the MERN stack, SQL, and AWS. The developer will work on client-focused solutions involving application development, data analytics, system migrations, and ongoing technical support.

The ideal candidate has 6–10 years of full-stack development experience, strong JavaScript and SQL expertise, hands-on AWS experience, and the ability to independently deliver high-quality technical solutions while collaborating effectively with a broader team. Experience within insurance, claims, or risk-related environments is beneficial but not required.

Candidates must provide a portfolio, GitHub profile, or examples of previous development work that demonstrate relevant full-stack development experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate client and business requirements into practical, scalable technical solutions.
  • Meet established project goals and timelines while working with limited guidance from lead developers.
  • Collaborate with developers, consultants, and other stakeholders to develop and communicate project plans.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve coding, application, and performance issues.
  • Provide technical support to clients and internal teams, including assistance with escalated issues.
  • Analyze recurring technical issues and recommend opportunities to improve existing systems.
  • Serve as a technical resource and provide guidance or mentorship to analysts and other developers.
  • Manage source code using Git, including branching, merging, pull requests, and collaborative development workflows.
  • Follow software development best practices related to code quality, testing, security, documentation, and maintainability.
  • Produce clear and thorough technical documentation for applications, processes, and development work.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and identify opportunities to improve development efficiency and system performance.
  • Utilize AI-assisted development tools when appropriate to improve programming efficiency and accelerate development.
Required Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on experience with the MERN stack, including:
    • MongoDB
    • Express.js

    • Node.js
  • Strong JavaScript development experience.
  • Advanced SQL skills, including complex query development and database design.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and application deployment.
  • Experience with Git and collaborative source-control workflows.
  • Experience supporting application, platform, or data migrations.
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, debugging, deployment, and documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to independently manage development assignments with limited supervision.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Portfolio, GitHub profile, or relevant examples of previous development work are required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience within insurance, claims, risk consulting, or a related industry.
  • Experience developing client-facing technology solutions.
  • Experience building custom data analytics applications or solutions.
  • Experience with Docker and containerized application environments.
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes and container orchestration.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and development automation.
  • Experience with TypeScript or additional modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve developer productivity.
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced, hands-on full-stack developer with strong MERN, JavaScript, SQL, and AWS expertise who can independently take technical assignments from requirements through delivery. They are comfortable working directly with clients and internal stakeholders, solving complex development and data challenges, supporting migrations, and documenting their work thoroughly.

They are collaborative and communicative while also being self-sufficient and comfortable working with limited oversight. Experience supporting insurance or claims-related solutions would be an added advantage.
