What is a full stack developer?

A Full Stack Developer is a software professional who is skilled in both front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining complete web applications or systems, handling everything from user interfaces and databases to server logic and APIs. Full Stack Developers often work with a range of programming languages and frameworks, such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, Python, and SQL, among others. Their versatility allows them to contribute to multiple stages of the software development lifecycle, making them valuable assets to development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web development principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, back-end environments like Node.js or Django, version control systems like Git, and possibly cloud platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills distinguish excellent developers, allowing them to work effectively in team environments and with stakeholders. These technical and soft skills are vital for building, maintaining, and optimizing complex, user-friendly web applications that meet business needs.

What are some common challenges full stack developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Developers often collaborate with designers, backend engineers, project managers, and QA testers, which can introduce challenges like aligning on project requirements and managing different technical perspectives. Coordinating between frontend and backend tasks while ensuring seamless integration is another common hurdle. Additionally, staying up-to-date with evolving technologies on both ends of the stack requires strong time management and continuous learning. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering cohesive solutions.

What is the difference between Full Stack Developer vs Front End Developer?

Job description

Principal Software Engineer

Department: Gitwit

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Tulsa, OK

Compensation: $190,000 - $230,000 / year

What Youโ€™ll Build and Shape

In this role you will help turn raw opportunities into real products that form the core of new AIโ€‘first ventures. You will be involved early, when problems and signals are still forming.

Your work will include:

  • Shaping products from the beginning. Define what should be built, what should wait, and what can be cut before time is wasted.
  • Building from zero and shipping fast. Take concepts through prototype to product in usersโ€™ hands, often in days, not months.
  • Seeing work in the wild immediately. You will ship features that are used right away rather than tiny pieces of a giant system.
  • Making foundational technical decisions. Choose tools, architecture, and tradeโ€‘offs for the stage without inheriting someone elseโ€™s stack.
  • Working close to the truth. Learn directly from users, test assumptions, and adjust quickly.
  • Building across the full product reality. Consider usefulness, usability, differentiation, and economics.
  • Operating at a pace that keeps things fun. Small teams, minimal process, daily meaningful progress.
  • Helping shape ventures, not just software. Contribute to decisions that determine whether something becomes a feature, a product, or a company.
The Kind of Engineer Weโ€™re Looking For

We seek engineers with real zeroโ€‘toโ€‘one experience who have shaped product and technical decisions to move a venture forward.

Strong candidates typically have the following traits:

  • Real zeroโ€‘toโ€‘one evidence. Built something from scratch far enough to make product, technical, and speedโ€‘versusโ€‘quality tradeโ€‘offs in the real world.
  • Productโ€‘builder mindset. Focus on what should be built and what users need rather than just implementation.
  • Comfort in ambiguity. Progress without all variables resolved, create clarity while building.
  • Strong technical judgment. Make sound architectural and tooling decisions appropriate for the stage.
  • Modern web product experience. Design and ship fullโ€‘stack applications with TypeScript, React, Node.js.
  • AIโ€‘native product experience. Work with foundationโ€‘model APIs, prompt engineering, RAG, tool calling, agent workflows, and evaluate tradeโ€‘offs.
  • Voracious learning and sharp judgment. Understand emerging AI and apply it selectively to sharpen products.
  • Good sense of taste. Deliver sharp, usable, coherent experiences.
  • Team collaboration. Communicate clearly and collaborate across product, user, business, and technical domains.
  • Ownership mindset. Seek authorship over decisions that drive traction.
Technology Stack

While specific tools may evolve, teams commonly use:

  • TypeScript across the stack
  • React and modern frontend frameworks
  • Node.js backend services
  • PostgreSQL and cloudโ€‘native infrastructure
  • OpenAI, Anthropic, and other foundation model APIs
  • AI orchestration, retrieval systems, and workflow automation
What We Offer

This role comes with competitive salary, strong benefits, and meaningful equity in every venture the studio builds.

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary
  • Meaningful equity in every venture the studio builds
  • 8 weeks of PTO
  • Excellent health, vision, and dental insurance (99% of employee premiums paid)
  • 401(k) with 4% match
  • Life insurance
  • Paid parental leaveCell phone reimbursement
  • Highโ€‘trust, highโ€‘autonomy culture
  • The chance to work on multiple highโ€‘impact ventures each year
  • Remoteโ€‘first collaboration with occasional inโ€‘person gatherings

This is a fullโ€‘time remote role for candidates based in the United States. Core Central Time overlap, active team collaboration, and occasional travel for key planning sessions or gatherings are required.
