What is a full stack developer?

A Full Stack Developer is a software professional who is skilled in both front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining complete web applications or systems, handling everything from user interfaces and databases to server logic and APIs. Full Stack Developers often work with a range of programming languages and frameworks, such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, Python, and SQL, among others. Their versatility allows them to contribute to multiple stages of the software development lifecycle, making them valuable assets to development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web development principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, back-end environments like Node.js or Django, version control systems like Git, and possibly cloud platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills distinguish excellent developers, allowing them to work effectively in team environments and with stakeholders. These technical and soft skills are vital for building, maintaining, and optimizing complex, user-friendly web applications that meet business needs.

What are some common challenges full stack developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Developers often collaborate with designers, backend engineers, project managers, and QA testers, which can introduce challenges like aligning on project requirements and managing different technical perspectives. Coordinating between frontend and backend tasks while ensuring seamless integration is another common hurdle. Additionally, staying up-to-date with evolving technologies on both ends of the stack requires strong time management and continuous learning. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering cohesive solutions.

What is the difference between Full Stack Developer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack DeveloperFront End Developer
SkillsProficient in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams.Primarily involved in UI/UX design and front-end implementation in larger teams.

While both roles require strong web development skills, Full Stack Developers handle both front-end and back-end tasks, providing a comprehensive approach to web projects. Front End Developers focus solely on creating engaging and responsive user interfaces. Understanding these differences helps employers and developers choose the right role for their project needs.

Is full stack developer still in demand?

Full stack developers are currently in high demand due to their ability to work on both front-end and back-end development, with skills in frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and database management. The role remains essential across industries, especially as companies prioritize versatile developers who can adapt to evolving technologies.

What will a full stack developer do?

A full stack developer designs, develops, and maintains both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work with languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side technologies, often using frameworks and tools such as React, Node.js, and databases. Full stack developers are responsible for ensuring seamless integration and functionality across all parts of a web project.

Job description

Greenfield Full Stack Developer

Company:

The Boeing Company

ABOUT BOEING DIGITAL SERVICES

At Boeing Digital Services, we focus on practical innovation that drives tangible results for the aerospace industry. Our team leverages advanced technology and data analytics to develop solutions that enhance operational efficiency and meet the needs of our customers. We are dedicated to creating intuitive, scalable, and secure solutions that empower our customers, partners, and teams to succeed. Join us in creating the future of aviation technology, where your contributions will shape impactful solutions for airlines around the globe.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Boeing Digital Services is seeking a Greenfield Full Stack Developer to support end-to-end software delivery within our digital aircraft maintenance product suite. This role is grounded in strong software development fundamentals, with an emphasis on leveraging modern AI-assisted tools to build cloud-native systems at the cutting edge of aerospace technology.

You will work closely with Developers, Engineering, Greenfield Leadership, Data Science, and Architects to deliver product features and capabilities that keep AI and ML at the center of our solutions. This is a hybrid position based out of Denver, CO or Tukwila, WA, requiring 2-3 days per week on-site.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Execution in Support of Modernization

You will be modernizing systems that have been running the business for years, while building new ones designed to run it for years to come. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Building full-stack, production-grade applications - frontend interfaces, backend services, REST and GraphQL APIs, and the integrations that tie them together in complex enterprise environments

  • Writing clean, testable, well-structured code across multiple languages and paradigms, and reviewing others' code to the same standard

  • Writing and integrating tests (unit, integration, system) across the development process to ensure quality from local development through to deployment

  • Designing and implementing event-driven and microservices architectures that can scale, evolve, and be maintained by teams who did not build them

  • Integrating AI, ML, or LLM capabilities directly into client applications - including agentic workflows, RAG pipelines, AI-augmented developer tooling, and intelligent automation that works reliably in production

  • Setting up and improving CI/CD pipelines, test automation, and delivery infrastructure so teams can ship with confidence

  • Mentoring and uplifting developers around you through pairing, code review, and real-time feedback that raises the performance of the whole team

  • Keeping product leadership and architects informed of technical risk, blockers, and changes that affect delivery

Data, Modeling & Applied Algorithms

  • Apply algorithms and data-driven approaches to solve complex web and application challenges

  • Translate business needs into clear technical requirements, implementation approaches, and measurable success criteria

  • Work with application data across validation, transformation, and integration touchpoints spanning front-end and back-end systems

  • Evaluate solution performance using testing frameworks, production metrics, and user feedback loops

  • Support experimentation, monitoring, and data pipelines that ensure reliable application behavior in production

AI & Intelligent Systems

  • Build or integrate AI capabilities into real applications - with demonstrated understanding of what it takes to get an AI-powered or ML/LLM feature into production and keep it working

  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Codex) as a natural part of your daily workflow to move faster and produce higher-quality output

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Software Development Execution

  • You have built production applications from scratch and modernized legacy systems - comfortable with both greenfield and brownfield approaches, and know when to apply patterns like strangler fig or lift-and-refactor

  • You are fluent in multiple programming languages and paradigms, writing clean and testable code in both functional and object-oriented styles, knowing how to pick the right tool for the job

  • You have delivered full-stack solutions - frontend web apps, backend APIs, cloud-hosted services, and standalone applications - and understand how those pieces fit together end-to-end in complex enterprise environments

  • You have worked inside large enterprise environments with disparate and distributed systems - you know how to navigate organizational complexity and deliver in spite of it

  • You are comfortable owning your segment of the software development lifecycle end-to-end: writing code, reviewing pull requests, writing tests, and collaborating effectively with developers on both sides of you

  • You understand cloud-native architecture - containerization, microservices, event-driven patterns - and are comfortable with source control branching strategies and CI/CD automation

  • You have built or been closely embedded with operations teams, and understand cloud-native platform adoption (Kubernetes, managed container services), infrastructure as code, observability, and what it means to build software that can be run in production

BasicQualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • 2 or more years' professional experience in an application development role, performing core activities across the software lifecycle - from requirements gathering and design through coding, testing, integrations, deployments, and production support

  • 2+ years of proven experience with full-stack web development

  • 2+ years of experience with modern software product development, integration, and delivery

  • 2+ years of hands-on development experience in a collaborative team environment using Agile principles, structured code review, and automated DevOps processes and tooling

  • Experience working with relational or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, Azure SQL, MongoDB, or equivalent) - including data modeling, querying, and integration across application layers

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field

  • Advanced degree (Master's or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related discipline - particularly for candidates with experience in applied algorithms, AI/ML, or advanced system design

  • Experience or exposure integrating AI, ML, or LLM capabilities into software applications, including model APIs, prompt orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation, or intelligent automation workflows

  • Experience with cloud-native architecture and delivery tooling on Microsoft Azure (e.g., AKS, Azure Functions, Azure DevOps) or equivalent platforms - including containerization, infrastructure as code, and observability

  • Experience modernizing legacy systems or working in brownfield environments, including approaches such as strangler fig, lift-and-refactor, or incremental modernization

  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data, including data cleaning, feature design, validation, quality checks, or analytical workflows

  • Familiarity with Databricks or similar unified data and AI platforms - a strong plus for candidates supporting data pipeline or ML-integrated feature work

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams, partnering with Product, Design, Engineering, Data Science, Architecture, or Operations to deliver business outcomes

  • Experience in aerospace, industrial, manufacturing, transportation, or similarly complex regulated US-based environments
