What is a full stack developer intern?

A Full Stack Developer Intern is a trainee who assists in building both the front-end (user interface) and back-end (server, database) components of web applications. Interns in this role work under the guidance of experienced developers to learn and contribute to the entire software development process. They often use programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, and frameworks such as React, Node.js, or Django. The internship provides practical experience in coding, debugging, and deploying web applications, preparing interns for a full-time developer position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack developer intern?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer Intern, you need a strong grasp of front-end and back-end programming languages, such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and either Node.js, Python, or Java, along with a relevant academic background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, web frameworks (e.g., React, Express), and databases (SQL/NoSQL) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate with teams and adapt to new technologies. These competencies are crucial for contributing to real-world projects, quickly adapting to workplace demands, and laying the foundation for a successful development career.

What types of projects and technologies can a full stack developer intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Full Stack Developer Intern, you'll typically be involved in projects that span both front-end and back-end development, such as building web applications, developing new features, or troubleshooting existing systems. You may work with technologies like JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React or Angular) for the front end, and languages such as Python, Java, or Node.js for the back end. It's common to collaborate closely with other developers, designers, and sometimes product managers, gaining exposure to the full software development lifecycle. Interns often participate in code reviews, agile sprints, and team meetings, providing valuable hands-on experience and learning opportunities.

How to get an internship for a full stack developer?

To secure a full stack developer internship, candidates should build a strong portfolio demonstrating skills in front-end and back-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and frameworks like React or Node.js. Gaining experience through personal projects, contributing to open-source, and obtaining relevant certifications can improve chances, along with applying through company career portals or internship programs and preparing for technical interviews. Having a solid understanding of version control systems like Git and good problem-solving skills are also beneficial.

Is a full stack developer intern still in demand?

Full stack developer internships remain in demand as companies seek candidates with skills in front-end and back-end technologies, including JavaScript, Python, and frameworks like React or Node.js. Internships provide valuable experience and can lead to full-time roles, especially as demand for versatile developers continues to grow in tech industries.

Job description

What Do We Do?

Triple Whale is the AI operating system built for modern ecommmerce. We help you see what's actually working in your business, what's not, and what to do next. Then we take action for you - pausing the underperforming ad, generating the next batch of creative, flagging the inventory risk before it bites.

We pull every signal in your business into one place, and put it on the most trusted measurement foundation in the industry. And on top of that, we give you the most actionable AI in commerce - Moby 2 - letting you tap any LLM you want, grounded in the full context of your business. Moby 2 doesn't just surface insights, it executes decisions for you, with automations that make the rest of your stack smarter.

The result: more than 60,000 brands like Pressed Juicery, OUAI, and True Classic turn mountains of complex data into actions that actually grow profit, at a speed and scale that is not humanly possible.

Why Triple Whale Needs You:

We're looking for a Senior Cloud Backend Engineer to join our Infrastructure Team.  You should enjoy solving complex problems, working deep in the details, helping other developers, and owning systems end-to-end.  This role also includes being a key part of our weekend on-call rotation, supporting the reliability of our platform.

Are you passionate about building reliable, scalable systems? Do you thrive on open-ended problems? Do you love designing, building, and owning complex infrastructure from conception to production?  If yes, you're in the right place.

What You'll Do:
  • Deploy and support our service infrastructure in Kubernetes
  • Identify the right tools and technologies for major initiatives and then build them
  • Help other teams and developers design robust and scalable systems.
  • Scale and optimize multiple databases
  • Build internal tooling that accelerates developer velocity
  • Provide observability, monitoring, and visibility across our systems

**On-Call Responsibilities (2 rotations per month) - You will participate in a shared on-call rotation, typically 1-2 times per month, covering the period from Friday at 7:00 AM ET through Saturday at 5:00 PM ET.

How our on-call system works
  • You'll receive full internal training to understand our architecture, operational flows, and incident procedures
  • During your rotation, you are the primary point of escalation for production issues
  • On-call is not a daily responsibility, only during your assigned weekends
  • Shifts rotate across the team to maintain balance and avoid burnout
What on-call requires
  • Strong understanding of system architecture and cross-service dependencies
  • Previous real-world experience in production on-call environments
  • Ability to quickly assess incidents, identify scope/root cause, and understand platform impact
  • Ability to classify severity and prioritize response appropriately
  • Capability to deploy safe production hotfixes when needed
  • Solid judgment under pressure - especially when operating independently
  • Ownership mindset: from detection to mitigation to resolution
What You'll Bring:
  • 6+ years of experience as an independent backend or infrastructure engineer
  • Ability to design and build scalable, reliable systems
  • Strong communication skills
  • Hands-on builder mentality - this is a coding role.
  • While this is a remote position, we're currently only considering candidates who are already located in either the New York Tri-State area or the Columbus, OH area. Although there isn't a regular in-office schedule, we do ask team members to come into the office periodically for in-person collaboration from time to time, so being within a reasonable commuting distance is important for this role.
  • Experience with:
    • Relational and non-relational databases
    • Major Cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure), GCP is an advantage
    • Streaming systems
    • Scaling large systems
    • Message queues
    • Monitoring systems like DataDog, Grafana, Groundcover
    • CI/CD, Git
    • Bonus Skills: Kubernetes and Knative (production experience) & ClickHouse
Technologies we use
  • Databases: ClickHouse, MongoDB, Redis, PubSub, Postgres, BigTable, Firestore, SonicDataFlow
  • Infrastructure: Kubernetes, Knative, GCP, Temporal, Pulumi
  • Languages: Node.js, TypeScript, Python
  • Tooling: Git, GitHub, GCP build infrastructure, GitHub Actions
Our Values:
  • We Are Customer Obsessed: From our mission to every detailed project, everything we do is designed to create a positive impact for our customers.
  • We Move (Very!) Quickly: The speed at which we work, iterate, and deliver value is our most competitive advantage.
  • We Are Trustworthy: Candor, directness, and honest communication helps us learn, grow and improve so we can win together.
  • We Are Curious: We extend beyond our comfort zone and ask questions that guide us towards new, creative, and bold paths.
  • We Act Like A Mensch: We act with honor, integrity and empathy, and have deep respect for our customers and each other.

Compensation Range: $160K-$190K

Our compensation ranges are set using benchmarks from growth-stage companies and factor in function, level, and location- so everything stays above board and whale-balanced.  The range you see on each job posting shows the minimum and maximum target salary for new hires across all U.S. locations.
