What is a full stack data engineer?

A Full Stack Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains the entire data pipeline, from data collection and storage to processing and visualization. They work with both the backend infrastructure (such as databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes) and frontend tools (like dashboards or reporting systems) to ensure data is accessible and usable for analytics. Full Stack Data Engineers possess skills in programming, database management, data modeling, cloud platforms, and often data visualization, allowing them to manage every stage of data flow within an organization.

How does a full stack data engineer typically balance responsibilities between backend data infrastructure and frontend data presentation tasks?

Full Stack Data Engineers are often required to split their time between developing robust backend data pipelines and creating user-facing tools or dashboards that visualize data insights. This dual responsibility means you'll need to prioritize tasks based on project needs, effectively collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and frontend developers. Communication is key, as you'll bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows seamlessly from source systems to end users. Over time, many engineers find opportunities to specialize further or move into leadership roles overseeing data architecture and team strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency in both backend (e.g., Python, Java) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, React) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), big data tools (like Spark or Hadoop), and database systems (SQL and NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these technologies are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between data, development, and business teams. These skills ensure you can design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions that meet organizational needs efficiently.

What is the difference between Full Stack Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectFull Stack Data EngineerData Scientist

Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, where data infrastructure is keyResearch, analytics, product development teams

Full Stack Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data availability. Data Scientists analyze data, develop models, and generate insights. While both roles require strong technical skills, Full Stack Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

Ridley is rebuilding the home transaction around the consumer.

Our mission is to eliminate the $100B homeowners lose every year to real estate commissions by replacing a fragmented, intermediary-driven process with AI. We believe software will become the primary interface for buying and selling a home, while human experts are brought in only where they create real value.

Backed by leading investors and with strong early traction, we're building the AI-native platform that will define the next generation of residential real estate.

The Role

We're looking for an exceptional Full Stack Engineer to help build the future of one of the world's largest industries.

You'll work directly with the CEO and founding team to design, build, and scale an AI-native product from the ground up. This isn't a role where you'll own a small corner of a mature codebase, you'll help define the architecture, product, and engineering culture of the company.

AI is central to how we build. We use the latest AI coding tools to move faster, automate repetitive work, and spend more time solving hard product and engineering problems.

What You'll Do
  • Own the design, architecture, and implementation of features across the stackโ€”from frontend to backend to cloud infrastructure.
  • Build fast, intuitive user experiences with React, Next.js, and Tailwind.
  • Develop scalable backend services with Node.js and AWS.
  • Design and operate cloud infrastructure using AWS (CDK, CloudFront, API Gateway, DynamoDB, Lambda, SQS, SNS, Bedrock, S3, EC2, and Fargate).
  • Build AI-native product experiences by integrating frontier language models into core user workflows.
  • Design and implement agentic systems that leverage tool use, memory, retrieval, and orchestration to complete complex tasks on behalf of users.
  • Work AI-first, using tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Copilot to dramatically accelerate development while maintaining a high quality bar.
  • Partner closely with product, design, and legal to ship secure, reliable, and scalable features.
  • Improve our engineering systems, CI/CD pipelines, and developer tooling as the company grows.
What We're Looking For
  • 3-5 years of experience building modern full stack applications, ideally at an early-stage startup.
  • Strong experience designing and operating production systems on AWS.
  • Deep expertise with React, Next.js, Node.js, and TypeScript.
  • Hands-on experience building AI-powered applications using modern foundation models (Anthropic, OpenAI, Bedrock, or similar).
  • Experience building agentic systems, including retrieval, tool calling, memory, evaluation, and multi-step orchestration.
  • Fluent with modern AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or Copilotโ€”you use them to multiply your output, not just generate code.
  • Proven ability to design software architecture and make sound technical tradeoffs.
  • Strong product instincts and a track record of shipping polished, end-to-end features.
  • High ownership, excellent judgment, and the ability to move quickly through ambiguity.
Why Join Ridley

This is an opportunity to help redefine how millions of people buy and sell homes.

Ridley is already live with real customers, real revenue, and strong early momentum. We've been featured in The New York Times , The Daily , and CBS, and are backed by leading investors who believe, as we do, that AI will fundamentally reshape residential real estate.

If you want to help build the company that defines that future, we'd love to talk.
