What is a full stack data engineer?

A Full Stack Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains the entire data pipeline, from data collection and storage to processing and visualization. They work with both the backend infrastructure (such as databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes) and frontend tools (like dashboards or reporting systems) to ensure data is accessible and usable for analytics. Full Stack Data Engineers possess skills in programming, database management, data modeling, cloud platforms, and often data visualization, allowing them to manage every stage of data flow within an organization.

How does a full stack data engineer typically balance responsibilities between backend data infrastructure and frontend data presentation tasks?

Full Stack Data Engineers are often required to split their time between developing robust backend data pipelines and creating user-facing tools or dashboards that visualize data insights. This dual responsibility means you'll need to prioritize tasks based on project needs, effectively collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and frontend developers. Communication is key, as you'll bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows seamlessly from source systems to end users. Over time, many engineers find opportunities to specialize further or move into leadership roles overseeing data architecture and team strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency in both backend (e.g., Python, Java) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, React) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), big data tools (like Spark or Hadoop), and database systems (SQL and NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these technologies are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between data, development, and business teams. These skills ensure you can design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions that meet organizational needs efficiently.

What is the difference between Full Stack Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectFull Stack Data EngineerData Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Engineering certificationsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Science or related fields
Work EnvironmentBuild data pipelines, manage databases, develop APIsAnalyze data, create models, generate insights
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, where data infrastructure is keyResearch, analytics, product development teams

Full Stack Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data availability. Data Scientists analyze data, develop models, and generate insights. While both roles require strong technical skills, Full Stack Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Lead Full Stack Software Engineer

Digitalturbine

Durham, NC โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 11 days ago

Job description

At Digital Turbine, we make mobile advertising experiences more meaningful and rewarding for users, app publishers, and advertisers - intelligently connecting people in more ways, across more devices. We provide app publishers and advertisers with powerful ads and experiences that captivate consumers, fuel performance, and help telecoms and OEMs supercharge awareness, acquisition, and monetization. In a rapidly evolving industry, we are constantly innovating and creating better paths of discovery to connect consumers, publishers, and advertisers across the mobile ecosystem.

Please note that Digital Turbine is a hybrid work environment-only candidates local to the posting location will be considered.

Digital Turbine runs on small, autonomous pods that own an outcome and a roadmap end to end. We hire engineers, not language specialists: we care that you can reason about systems, pick the right tool for the problem, and ship reliable software across the stack.

As a Lead Full Stack Engineer, you'll build the product surfaces that bring our marketplace together - campaign management and creation, unified dashboards and reporting, audience and asset tooling, and the APIs that connect demand to supply. You'll work across front-end, back-end, and data, contributing to the unified product architecture at the heart of our FY27 roadmap. The underlying platform requires heavy back-end engineering, low-latency optimization, and algorithmic problem-solving to manage massive throughput and real-time marketplace dynamics.

About the Lead Full Stack Software Engineer:
  • Design and build full-stack features - from responsive web front-ends to back-end services and APIs - that power campaign management, reporting, and marketplace optimization.

  • Choose the right language and tools for each problem (we run a polyglot stack), and keep the front end lightweight by pushing complex computational logic, data modeling, and heavy algorithmic weight into robust, scalable back-end services.

  • Build and consume well-designed APIs that integrate DT products into a unified architecture rather than isolated silos.

  • Own your services in production: testing, observability, performance, and on-call, treating quality as a whole-team responsibility.

  • Collaborate directly with product leads and stakeholders, contributing to scoping, estimation, and technical decisions within your pod.

  • Mentor teammates and raise engineering standards through code review, automation, and pragmatic architecture.

About you as the Lead Full Stack Software Engineer:
  • 8+ years building and shipping production platforms, with a heavy skew toward backend architecture, system design, and code optimization.

  • Strong algorithmic fundamentals, data structures, and a proven track record of solving complex data-processing or resource optimization problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to be effective in more than one language/ecosystem (e.g., TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, Scala, or C++) - you optimize for the problem, not a single tool.

  • Solid command of modern front-end frameworks (e.g., React) and back-end service design, plus relational and/or distributed data stores (MySQL, PostgreSQL, and similar).

  • Strong fundamentals in API design, data modeling, testing, and system design.

  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, agile, ownership-driven environment with limited hand-holding.

Nice to have skills:
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS or GCP), containers, and CI/CD.

  • Exposure to AdTech, dashboards/BI surfaces, or high-throughput data-driven products.

  • Experience integrating ML or data services into product workflows.
