What is the difference between Full Stack Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectFull Stack Data EngineerData Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Engineering certificationsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Science or related fields
Work EnvironmentBuild data pipelines, manage databases, develop APIsAnalyze data, create models, generate insights
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, where data infrastructure is keyResearch, analytics, product development teams

Full Stack Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data availability. Data Scientists analyze data, develop models, and generate insights. While both roles require strong technical skills, Full Stack Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency in both backend (e.g., Python, Java) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, React) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), big data tools (like Spark or Hadoop), and database systems (SQL and NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these technologies are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between data, development, and business teams. These skills ensure you can design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions that meet organizational needs efficiently.

How does a full stack data engineer typically balance responsibilities between backend data infrastructure and frontend data presentation tasks?

Full Stack Data Engineers are often required to split their time between developing robust backend data pipelines and creating user-facing tools or dashboards that visualize data insights. This dual responsibility means you'll need to prioritize tasks based on project needs, effectively collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and frontend developers. Communication is key, as you'll bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows seamlessly from source systems to end users. Over time, many engineers find opportunities to specialize further or move into leadership roles overseeing data architecture and team strategy.

What is a full stack data engineer?

A Full Stack Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains the entire data pipeline, from data collection and storage to processing and visualization. They work with both the backend infrastructure (such as databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes) and frontend tools (like dashboards or reporting systems) to ensure data is accessible and usable for analytics. Full Stack Data Engineers possess skills in programming, database management, data modeling, cloud platforms, and often data visualization, allowing them to manage every stage of data flow within an organization.

Altro Health

New York, NY • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision

Posted 11 days ago

Job description

About Us

Altro powers the next generation of wellness businesses with clinical infrastructure built for growth.

We're building a platform that enables wellness businesses to offer clinical services they currently can't provide on their own, including blood testing, prescriptions, and peptides, supervised by a clinical team. Think Shopify for wellness businesses.

The team behind Altro has done this before: Harvard Business School MBAs and a second-time founder, alongside operators and executives who've taken startups through exits as founding-team members. We're backed by top venture capital firms.

The tailwinds are massive: Peptides going mainstream, GLP-1s unlocking the category, the longevity movement in full swing, and AI unlocking what wasn't possible a year ago.

We're still early. Which means every hire matters. Join at the ground floor, work directly with the founders, and be part of something rare: a company at the intersection of a massive market shift and the moment when AI is reshaping what small teams can build.

The Role

We're looking for a Full Stack Engineer to join a small, high-velocity engineering team building the infrastructure that powers Altro's platform.

You'll ship real features from day one — building dashboards, partner-facing tools, and consumer experiences alongside our CTO and Senior Engineer. You'll work across the stack, though most of what you'll build lives closer to the front end than pure backend. You'll write code, ship to production efficiently, and grow fast alongside engineers who are voracious about the craft.

This is the right role for someone 2-4 years into their career who wants to level up fast. You'll get real ownership, direct feedback, exposure to modern tooling and infrastructure, and the freedom to grow into a senior engineer at Altro over the next few years.

What You'll Build
  • Partner and consumer experiences. The wellness operator's control panel, the consumer's clinical experience, everything that makes the two-sided marketplace work
  • Dashboards. Partner-facing analytics, consumer-facing progress views, internal ops dashboards — a lot of what the whole team is working on right now
  • AI-powered workflows. Features that use MCP and modern agentic frameworks to make our product smarter, and internal tools that let the team work faster
  • Data-driven features. We built our data infrastructure for AI and analytics from day one — you'll build features that leverage it
The Stack
  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, Next.js
  • Backend: Go, GraphQL, MongoDB
  • Cloud & infra: Google Cloud, including the Healthcare API
  • AI tooling: Claude Code and next-generation agentic dev environments
  • CI/CD: Modern pipeline with lints, checks, AI code review, and feature-flagged deployments

We stay current on our stack and invest in tooling so you can focus on shipping.

Requirements

Who You Are
  • 2-4 years of full-stack engineering experience, ideally at a startup or fast-moving team
  • Strong React skills. You've shipped real production frontends and you know your way around TypeScript, component architecture, state management, and modern build tooling
  • Full-stack comfort. You can work across the stack — build the frontend, wire up the API, work with the database. Front-end leaning is fine, back-end leaning is not (we need you shipping UI)
  • AI-native. You use Claude, Cursor, or equivalent AI tools daily. You're not skeptical of AI coding — you're getting fluent with it because you know it's leverage
  • Comfortable with startup pace. We move fast, ship often, and iterate. If you're coming from a slower environment, that's fine — but this role isn't a good fit if you want to move at big-company pace
  • Fast and hungry. You want to ship, learn, and grow. You're excited by the idea of getting reps at 3x the pace of a bigger company
  • E-commerce or marketplace background is a plus but not required. If you've built two-sided products, transaction flows, or seller/buyer experiences, tell us
What Matters Less
  • CS degree. Not required if you can do the work — self-taught, bootcamp, and non-traditional paths are all welcome
  • Domain expertise. We'll teach you what you need to know about wellness and clinical operations. What we care about is the engineering and the pace
What You'll Get

Beyond the standard startup pitch, a few things that actually differentiate this seat:

  • Modern AI-native tooling. You'll code with Claude Code and the latest agentic dev environments. If you're excited to work at the frontier of how engineers ship in 2026, this is that seat
  • Data infrastructure built for AI from day one. You'll build features that leverage our data foundation and work with MCP and agentic frameworks as part of the product, not as a side project
  • A codebase that respects your time. We stay current on our stack, invest in tooling, and ship to production efficiently
  • A team that levels each other up. Everyone here reads technical papers, watches conference talks, and shares what they learn. Annual learning budget backs it up
  • Minimal meetings, real autonomy. We protect deep work
Logistics
  • Location: New York City
  • Schedule: Hybrid — 3 days in-office, remainder remote
  • Reports to: CTO

Benefits

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: $130,000 – $150,000, depending on experience
  • Equity: Meaningful early-employee equity grant
  • Health benefits: Medical, dental, and vision (100% covered by Altro)
  • Commuter benefits
  • One Medical membership
  • Peloton Digital membership
  • Learning and development budget
  • $150 monthly reimbursement for Altro products
Why This Role

This is a seat on a small engineering team at a company with real momentum, modern tooling, and a stack that respects your time. You'll ship faster here than at most companies, learn faster because of the people around you, and have direct proximity to the founders and the product decisions that matter.

If you're 2-4 years into your career and want to grow into a senior engineer — with the reps, the mentorship, and the equity to make it worth it — this is that role.
