Linux Systems Administrator

We're looking for a hands-on Linux Systems Administrator who likes getting into the guts of a system and making it perform optimally. The candidate must take ownership of the infrastructure and keep it healthy and secure.You'll manage our Linux servers, virtualization, cloud footprint, and network edge, and you'll have plenty of latitude to shape how it all fits together.


We expect strong Linux fundamentals, a genuine curiosity about how systems work, and the drive to grow into the unfamiliar parts. We need someone who is comfortable reading logs, scripting fixes, and documenting their work.


In your first few months you'll take ownership of the Linux and virtualization environment, help move us off SonicWall onto OPNsense cleanly, and put automation and monitoring in place so the infrastructure runs quietly and predictably. Over time you'll grow into the broader systems role we need, steadily making the environment more secure and more automated.


**Candidates must live within commutable distance to our office in Ocean City, NJ and must be able to work in-office two (2) days per week.


Responsibilities:

  • Administer and maintain Linux servers (Ubuntu): provisioning, patching, hardening, storage, users/permissions, and day-to-day troubleshooting.
  • Manage our Proxmox virtualization environment: VMs and containers, resource allocation, snapshots, backups, and keeping the cluster healthy.
  • Own the network edge and firewall: we currently run SonicWall and are transitioning to OPNsense, so you'll help drive that migration and then run it (firewall rules, VPN, DNS, and routing).
  • Automate the repetitive stuff: write Bash/Python scripts so routine admin work, provisioning, and monitoring run themselves instead of consuming your day. We leverage AI tooling (including Claude) day-to-day, and you're welcome to use it here too.
  • Set up and maintain monitoring, alerting, logging, and backups/restores.
  • Support the infrastructure our engineering team builds upon: Docker container hosts, deployment targets, and databases.
  • Operate and maintain our AWS footprint: EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, and VPC networking, all while maintaining an eye on cost, security, and reliability.
  • Respond to incidents, dig into root causes, and put fixes in place that keep problems from recurring.
  • Document configurations and procedures so the environment is maintainable by more than just you.


Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of hands-on Linux administration in a production environment. Must be comfortable at the command line, networking, storage, and package management.
  • A doer's mindset. You'd rather fix the thing and script it than file a ticket and wait. You must be willing to take ownership and follow through without being chased.
  • Solid scripting for automation (Bash required, Python or similar a strong plus).
  • Working knowledge of virtualization: Proxmox specifically is ideal, but solid KVM/hypervisor experience translates.
  • Sound networking fundamentals: firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, DNS, and routing. Must know enough to run and troubleshoot the network edge.
  • Some AWS exposure (EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, VPC) and must be clearly capable of ramping quickly on the unknown components.
  • Curiosity and the drive to grow into the areas of the stack you haven't mastered yet.
  • Clear written communication and a habit of documenting what you build.


Preferred/Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

  • Hands-on Proxmox experience specifically (clustering, backups, ZFS/Ceph storage).
  • OPNsense or pfSense firewall experience (bonus if you've run a SonicWall-to-OPNsense-style migration before).
  • Experience configuring network switches with MLAG, preferably using MikroTik devices.
  • Docker experience and comfortable creating highly-integrated container stacks.
  • PostgreSQL or general database operations experience.
  • Experience with AI tooling (e.g., Claude) for scripting, troubleshooting, or automation (we use it here, so hands-on experience is a plus).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., LPIC, RHCSA, or AWS SysOps/Solutions Architect).
