What is a full stack application developer?

A Full Stack Application Developer is a software professional who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. This means they can work on the user interface, server-side logic, databases, and sometimes even deployment and infrastructure. Full Stack Developers are versatile and can handle multiple aspects of building and maintaining web applications. Their broad skill set allows them to work across the entire technology stack, making them valuable assets to development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack application developer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Application Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, database systems (SQL or NoSQL), version control (Git), and potentially certifications like AWS Certified Developer are commonly expected. Problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills, enabling collaboration and efficient troubleshooting. These combined skills ensure the ability to independently build, maintain, and scale robust applications that meet user and business needs.

What are some common challenges full stack application developers face when managing both front-end and back-end tasks?

Full Stack Application Developers often encounter the challenge of balancing priorities between front-end user experience and back-end system performance. Staying proficient in a wide range of technologies and frameworks can be demanding, especially as projects scale or new tools are adopted. Effective communication with both UI/UX designers and server-side engineers is essential to ensure cohesive integration and smooth workflows. Adapting to frequent context switching and troubleshooting across the entire stack requires strong organizational skills and a proactive approach to learning.

This is a Workplace Engineering position at the Associate level, which is part of the job family responsible for managing and optimizing the technical environment and end-user experience across various workplace technologies, ensuring seamless operations and user satisfaction across the organization.

Morgan Stanley
Since 1935, Morgan Stanley is known as a global leader in financial services, continuously evolving and innovating to better serve our clients and our communities in more than 40 countries around the world.

The Workplace Design & Delivery (WDD) Operations team is seeking a Junior Full Stack Developer to support Workforce Technology Services (WTS), with a focus on PMO enablement and ADS / Hardware Governance. The role will contribute to the design, development, enhancement, and support of internal business applications, reporting capabilities, automation solutions, and governance tooling that support planning, execution, oversight, and decision-making across strategic Workforce Technology initiatives.

The successful candidate will partner with program managers, PMO leadership, governance teams, sourcing and procurement partners, finance stakeholders, and technology teams to deliver practical, scalable solutions that improve operational efficiency, data quality, transparency, and control discipline.

This opportunity offers exposure to enterprise-scale technology programs and the ability to build capabilities across full stack development, automation, reporting, data integration, and project management processes within a controlled and collaborative environment.

What you'll do in the role:
Full Stack Application Development

  • Design, develop, test, enhance, and maintain internal web-based applications that support WDD operations, PMO processes, and governance activities.

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and support of strategic PMO and governance platforms, including BranchView, WDD Project Tracker, and the Portfolio Reporting Tool (PRT).

  • Develop front-end interfaces and back-end components that improve usability, scalability, performance, and access to reliable data.

  • Participate in the application lifecycle, including requirements analysis, solution design, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and production support.

Reporting, Analytics, and Data Integration

  • Build and maintain reporting solutions that support PMO governance, management oversight, and executive decision-making.

  • Develop dashboards, weekly status packages, RAG reporting, executive summaries, and portfolio analytics to provide consistent and actionable insight.

Automation and Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to streamline operational, governance, and reporting workflows through automation and process improvement.

  • Develop solutions using Microsoft Power Platform and related technologies to reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and strengthen auditability.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance PMO effectiveness, governance controls, and delivery transparency.

  • Create solutions that improve tracking of actions, risks, dependencies, and project delivery metrics across global programs.

Governance and Operational Support

  • Support ADS and Hardware Governance initiatives through internal tooling, process automation, and reporting enhancements.

  • Assist with data management, governance reporting, compliance support, and audit-readiness activities.

  • Ensure solutions are developed in alignment with organizational controls, technology standards, operational governance requirements, and data management expectations.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience developing web applications using modern front-end and back-end technologies.

  • Knowledge of JavaScript / TypeScript, HTML/CSS, React or similar front-end frameworks, REST APIs, SQL, and database concepts.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Power Platform, including Power Apps and Power Automate.

  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data sources and applying sound data quality practices.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, with attention to detail and control awareness.

  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Jira, PPM, SharePoint, Power BI, or other enterprise reporting and collaboration platforms.

  • Exposure to project management, PMO, governance, or technology delivery environments.

  • Experience building workflow automation, reporting, or data integration solutions.

  • Understanding of governance, risk, compliance, operational controls, or audit requirements within an enterprise technology organization.

Business Impact
This role supports a portfolio of strategic Workforce Technology initiatives across multiple regions and contributes to improved operational transparency, governance effectiveness, reporting accuracy, and process efficiency. The scope includes support for workplace modernization, hardware lifecycle management, demand governance, and enterprise project delivery activities.
By developing sustainable internal applications, reporting capabilities, and automation solutions, this role helps reduce operational risk, strengthen auditability, and improve the effectiveness of the WTS PMO and governance functions.
