Fuel System Design Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fuel system design engineer?

To thrive as a Fuel System Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, a strong understanding of fluid dynamics, and relevant experience in fuel system components. Familiarity with CAD software (such as CATIA or SolidWorks), simulation tools, and industry standards is typically required, alongside certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and clear communication skills set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative design of fuel systems that meet stringent regulatory and performance requirements.

What is the difference between Fuel System Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectFuel System Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Automotive, or Aerospace Engineering; specialized training in fuel systemsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; broader engineering focus
Work EnvironmentAutomotive, aerospace, or industrial settings focusing on fuel systemsVarious industries including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and energy
Industry UsageSpecific to fuel system design and integrationGeneral engineering tasks across multiple systems

The Fuel System Design Engineer specializes in designing and developing fuel delivery systems, while the Mechanical Engineer has a broader role in mechanical systems. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in focus and industry application.

What are some typical challenges faced by fuel system design engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Fuel System Design Engineers often work closely with teams from mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing disciplines to ensure that fuel system components integrate seamlessly with the overall vehicle architecture. A common challenge is balancing conflicting requirements, such as safety standards, cost targets, and spatial constraints, while meeting performance goals. Clear communication and early alignment with stakeholders are crucial to avoid costly redesigns and ensure the system meets all regulatory and operational demands. Being adaptable and proactive in problem-solving helps Fuel System Design Engineers navigate these interdisciplinary challenges effectively.

What is a fuel system design engineer?

Fuel System Design Engineers are specialized engineers who design, develop, and test fuel systems for vehicles, aircraft, or industrial equipment. Their work involves ensuring that fuel delivery systems are efficient, safe, and meet regulatory standards. They collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate fuel systems with engines and other components, and use tools like CAD software for system modeling. These engineers also analyze system performance, troubleshoot issues, and may be involved in testing prototypes or supporting production. The role requires strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, materials, and safety regulations.

Job description

Design Engineer
Build the future of investment management with us
The infrastructure managing $300 trillion in assets was built in the 90s. Now, all of it is up for grabs. The winner of the AI era of investment management will be a $100B+ company. We intend to be that company.
To get there, we're assembling the most talent-dense startup in New York. We hire people who are 1) exceptional, 2) allergic to anything that's not exceptional, and 3) recruiters of other exceptional people. We also have no tolerance for brilliant jerks.
We run lean by design. We work with a select group of the largest financial institutions in the world, go incredibly deep with each, and sit in the flow of trillions of dollars. We hire fewer people, ask each to own the outcome, and pay on impact - not tenure or experience.
Moment is not for everyone. The standards are unreasonably high. The pace is intense. And there is no playbook.
In return: the best work of your career, building a generational company.
About Moment
Moment is the AI operating system for investment management, built for the world's largest wealth firms and fintechs. Moment works with firms managing more than $10 trillion in client assets and is backed by Index, a16z, and Lightspeed. Moment was founded by former quants from Citadel and Jane Street and is based in NYC.
The Role
As we enter a new era, we're hiring a Design Engineer to help define what Moment's product feels like in the hands of the people who use it.
We're building software for the leading financial institutions of the world, and the experience of using it matters as much as what it does under the hood. The line between design and engineering is where the best product work happens - where an idea gets sketched, prototyped, and shipped by the same person, and where the details that make software feel inevitable get sweated all the way through to production.
As a Design Engineer at Moment, you will live at that intersection. You'll prototype quickly, ship polished UI in TypeScript, and obsess over the small interactions, micro-animations, and visual details that separate good product from great product. Moment will be a generational company, and the work you ship will set the standard for what financial software can feel like.
You'll work closely with design, product, and engineering to deliver experiences that are as ambitious and distinctive as the company itself. This is a highly autonomous, highly collaborative role. You are equally comfortable in Figma and in code, and you have a high bar for both. You can navigate different levels of abstraction; from a concept sketch to a production component. You can clearly articulate, lead, and execute work that spans design, prototyping, and frontend engineering.
You're a good fit if you have
  • 3+ years of experience as a frontend or design engineer with Typescript expertise.
  • Willing and able to just go figure stuff out :)
Even better if you have
  • Experience working as a product designer.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: $175K to $275K
  • Equity: aggressive initial grant + annual performance-based bonuses
  • Our beautiful West Village Office with a terrace / 5x a week in office
  • Free lunch and dinner.
  • $150 monthly gym stipend.
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage. 100% company reimbursement.
