Job description

Overview
We're looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer (contract) who can build polished, performant product experiences and stay close to the users and business problems those experiences serve. This is not a pure pixel-pushing role. You'll design and build the interfaces, state and data-integration layers, and component systems that power our operator-facing product, analytics, and internal tooling, and you'll need to understand the product and business context well enough to make good decisions about what to build and how to structure it.
The role centers on our core React web application today, with a growing need for real-time, data-dense interfaces, live operational dashboards, analytics views, and configuration tooling, as the platform evolves. You'll work across the full frontend lifecycle: design collaboration, implementation, data fetching and state management, testing, performance, accessibility, and long-term maintainability. The ideal candidate moves fluidly between crafting a clean, reusable component and architecting how an entire view fetches, caches, and renders live data, and cares as much about type safety, accessibility, and bundle cost as about shipping quickly.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, accessible user interfaces using React 18, TypeScript 5, and Vite (with SWC)
  • Build and maintain the data-integration layer: type-safe GraphQL operations via GraphQL Code Generator, and server-state management with TanStack Query (our preferred client; Apollo Client is present but legacy)
  • Architect client-side state boundaries: server state, URL/route state (React Router 6 loaders), and local UI state, and choose the right tool for each
  • Build reusable, composable components on top of our UI foundations (Tailwind CSS, Material UI 7, and Radix UI primitives with shadcn/ui-style patterns) and contribute to a consistent design system
  • Build data-dense experiences with AG Grid and Recharts, with attention to virtualization, pagination, and render performance
  • Design and implement real-time and low-latency UI patterns (polling, subscriptions, optimistic updates) for live operational views
  • Own frontend performance: bundle size, code splitting, Core Web Vitals, memoization, and render profiling
  • Implement and maintain a testing strategy across unit, component (React Testing Library), and end-to-end (Playwright or similar) layers
  • Partner with design, product, and backend engineering to define UI requirements, GraphQL contracts, and instrumentation
  • Establish and uphold accessibility standards (WCAG) across the product
  • Catch regressions early through testing, type safety, and monitoring (error tracking and real-user monitoring)

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of frontend or full-stack engineering experience with a strong frontend focus
  • Expert-level React (React 18) and TypeScript (TS 5) skills, including hooks, component composition patterns, and advanced typing
  • Hands-on experience integrating GraphQL APIs, ideally with code generation for type-safe operations
  • Experience with a modern server-state library such as TanStack Query (React Query), SWR, or Apollo Client, and a clear understanding of the distinction between client and server state
  • Experience with client-side routing and data loading (React Router 6 loaders or comparable)
  • Proficiency with modern build tooling (Vite, esbuild/SWC, or comparable)
  • Strong CSS skills and experience with utility-first styling (Tailwind) and a component library or primitive set (MUI, Radix/shadcn, or comparable)
  • Experience building data-dense UIs, tables/grids and charts, with attention to performance
  • Demonstrated ownership of frontend performance (code splitting, memoization, Core Web Vitals)
  • Experience with a testing strategy spanning unit, component, and end-to-end tests
  • Solid understanding of web accessibility (WCAG) and how to build inclusive interfaces
  • Comfort working across teams and staying close to product and business context, not just implementing tickets in isolation

Nice to Haves
  • Experience migrating between data-layer clients incrementally (e.g. Apollo Client → TanStack Query)
  • Experience owning or co-owning a design system / shared component library
  • Familiarity with real-time technologies (GraphQL subscriptions, WebSockets, Server-Sent Events)
  • Experience with SSR/streaming frameworks (Next.js, Remix) and a sense of when they're warranted
  • Familiarity with animation/interaction libraries (e.g. Framer Motion) and motion design
  • Experience with internationalization (i18n)
  • Experience with frontend observability (error tracking, real-user monitoring, performance budgets in CI)
  • Familiarity with monorepo tooling and Storybook
  • Prior work at a fast-growing startup where you owned or co-owned the frontend stack

Our Engineering Values
How we work matters as much as what we build. Four values guide the engineering team at Slang:
  • Start Less, Finish More - Focus is a choice. We ruthlessly prioritize, ask "why" before committing, and say no early so we ship meaningful work instead of accumulating half-finished efforts.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration - Great engineering doesn't happen in isolation. We share knowledge and load, assume best intentions, and work with each other, not just alongside each other.
  • Alignment & Communication - We move fast because we're aligned. We give feedback directly, speak up early, commit fully once a decision is made, and operate with low ego - caring more about the right outcome than being right.
  • Quality & Craft - Shortcuts compound. We test before we ship, manage tech debt deliberately, and right-size solutions - not out of perfectionism, but out of respect for the people who'll build on our work next.

Location
New York / Hybrid. Employees in the NYC area are expected in-office Tuesday through Thursday.
Compensation
$179K-$203k + Equity
Our Vision

By 2030, we will save businesses and consumers 1 billion minutes of precious time while transforming voice channels into the preferred mode of communication (it's faster and easier than text).
We have backgrounds building product at companies like Spotify, Buzzfeed, the New York Times, and OpenTable -shipping experiences that have reached hundreds of millions of users. Now, we're using our backgrounds to start a new culture, one that puts product and human-centered design above all else while fostering constant learning and growth.
