What is a frontend developer?

Frontend Developers are professionals who design and build the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces that users interact with directly in their browsers. Frontend Developers work closely with designers and backend developers to ensure a seamless and responsive user experience across different devices and platforms. Their role often includes optimizing website performance, ensuring accessibility, and maintaining code quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Frontend Developer, you need a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Angular, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), responsive design tools, and web performance optimization techniques is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving abilities help you build intuitive, user-friendly interfaces and collaborate effectively with design and backend teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality, interactive web applications that meet user and business needs.

How do frontend developers collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

Frontend Engineer -- Automotive Saas

Fort Myers, FL • Remote

Volie
Software Development • 11 - 50 employees

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Posted 4 days ago

Job description

Company Overview

At Volie, we build communication software for automotive dealerships. Our platform helps dealerships modernize customer communication across sales, service, BDC operations, and customer engagement. Volie supports high-volume, multi-channel communication workflows that help dealerships improve response times, customer experience, operational visibility, and team performance.

We are a growing SaaS company with a practical, ownership-driven culture. We value people who communicate clearly, solve problems directly, and take pride in building products that customers actually use.

As Volie continues to grow, we are investing heavily in our frontend experience. We are looking for a frontend-focused engineer who can help us build reliable, usable, and maintainable product workflows in our modern React application while also supporting our legacy Vue 2 application when needed.

Candidates in Florida or Colorado are preferred. This is a 100% remote position.

Position Overview

Volie is seeking a mid-to-senior Frontend Engineer to help build, maintain, and improve the customer-facing experience across our platform.

This role is frontend-first. The ideal candidate is strongest in React and modern frontend development, but also has enough backend awareness to support end-to-end feature delivery when frontend work touches APIs, server-side behavior, or database-backed data.

This is not a pure full-stack role. The right candidate should be comfortable working with backend engineers, reading API contracts, understanding JSON payloads, debugging browser issues, and reasoning through how frontend workflows connect to backend systems.

The person in this role should enjoy building usable product experiences, improving frontend quality, supporting legacy code responsibly, writing meaningful tests, and helping modernize the frontend platform over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain frontend features in React.
  • Support and maintain Vue 2 functionality in the legacy application when needed.
  • Translate product requirements and Jira tickets into clean, usable frontend experiences.
  • Integrate frontend workflows with backend APIs and data models.
  • Work with REST APIs, JSON payloads, validation responses, filtering, pagination, and search workflows.
  • Build clear loading states, error states, empty states, validation messages, and user feedback.
  • Write and maintain frontend tests for meaningful user workflows.
  • Use Playwright or similar tools to support regression coverage for critical frontend paths.
  • Debug frontend issues using browser developer tools, Sentry, Datadog, logs, and production error reports.
  • Work with Go/backend developers when frontend changes require API or server-side support.
  • Understand enough Postgres/database behavior to reason about frontend data displays and workflow issues.
  • Improve frontend performance, usability, consistency, and reliability.
  • Participate in code reviews and follow frontend engineering standards.
  • Help modernize frontend patterns over time without destabilizing the legacy application.
  • Collaborate with Product, Customer Success, QA/UAT, and Engineering to ensure shipped features are understandable, reliable, and supportable.

What Success Looks Like

  • Frontend features are reliable, usable, and maintainable.
  • React work is delivered with strong ownership and limited hand-holding.
  • Legacy Vue 2 functionality is supported responsibly when needed.
  • Frontend changes include appropriate tests for meaningful user workflows.
  • User-facing issues are debugged clearly and efficiently.
  • Frontend performance, error handling, and user experience improve over time.
  • Product requirements are translated into clear, working customer-facing workflows.
  • Backend/API dependencies are communicated clearly and resolved collaboratively.
  • The frontend codebase becomes more consistent, testable, and easier to maintain.
  • Customers and internal users experience fewer frontend bugs, confusing workflows, and production issues.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience building production frontend applications.
  • Strong React experience.
  • Strong JavaScript and/or TypeScript fundamentals.
  • Experience building customer-facing product workflows, not just static pages.
  • Experience working with REST APIs and JSON payloads.
  • Ability to handle loading states, error states, empty states, form validation, filtering, search, and pagination.
  • Experience using browser developer tools to debug frontend issues.
  • Experience with Git, pull requests, and code review workflows.
  • Frontend testing experience or willingness to write tests consistently.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ownership mindset around frontend quality, usability, and user experience.
  • Willingness to work in both modern and legacy frontend codebases.

Preferred Experience

  • Vue 2 experience.
  • TypeScript experience.
  • Playwright, Cypress, or similar frontend testing tools.
  • Sentry, Datadog, or similar observability/debugging tools.
  • Golang or backend API development experience.
  • Postgres or relational database familiarity.
  • SaaS application development experience.
  • Experience maintaining legacy applications.
  • Experience with complex forms, tables, dashboards, filters, or workflow-heavy interfaces.
  • Experience debugging production or customer-reported frontend issues.
  • Experience with feature flags or CI/CD workflows.
  • Experience with WebSockets, real-time interfaces, telephony, communications, CRM, or BDC workflows.

Our Culture

Volie is a scrappy, focused team solving complex problems in the automotive software space. We value ownership, clear communication, practical problem-solving, and people who are willing to dig into hard problems until they understand them.

We are not looking for someone who only wants to work in a perfect greenfield codebase. We are looking for someone who can build strong frontend experiences while also supporting and improving the systems we already have.

This role is a great fit for someone who is frontend-first, product-minded, comfortable with real-world complexity, and motivated by building software that customers actually use every day.

Why Join Volie?

  • Make an Impact: Frontend quality directly affects how customers experience Volie every day.
  • Modernization Opportunity: Help move our frontend platform forward while supporting important legacy workflows.
  • Real Ownership: Own meaningful frontend work from requirements through production support.
  • Collaborative Culture: Work closely with Product, Engineering, Customer Success, and leadership.
  • Practical Engineering: Solve real product problems in a high-volume SaaS environment.
  • Remote Flexibility: Join a remote team with preference for candidates in Florida or Colorado.
  • Growth Opportunity: Help shape frontend standards, testing practices, and product usability as Volie continues to grow.

Hiring Process

  1. Initial phone screening
  2. Technical / practical interview with the CTO and Lead Developer
  3. Final leadership interview with CEO/COO

Benefits

  • Health Insurance
  • Dental / Vision Insurance
  • Paid Time Off
  • 401(k)
  • Professional Development Opportunities
  • Company Supplied Laptop
  • Remote Work Flexibility

Background Check and System Access

Background checks are required.

This role may involve access to sensitive data, including customer data, operational data, application systems, and proprietary code. The person in this role is expected to follow company security, privacy, and data handling policies.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit their resume and a brief cover letter outlining their experience with React, modern frontend development, frontend testing, API integration, production debugging, and any experience with Vue 2, backend development, or SaaS applications.

Volie is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
