What is a front end web developer?

Front end web developers are professionals who design and build the visible parts of websites and web applications—the parts that users interact with directly. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create responsive, user-friendly interfaces, ensuring that web pages look good and function well across different devices and browsers. Their work involves collaborating with designers and back end developers to implement visual elements, optimize performance, and improve the overall user experience.

What does a front end web developer do?

A front end web developer develops the visual components of a website that are seen and interacted with by a user. This is also called the user interface. In this job, you work with code such as HTML and JavaScript and utilize CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to layout web pages. Unlike a back end developer, you focus on more than just performance and function. Your responsibilities include developing appealing yet functional desktop and mobile websites and applications, conducting maintenance and updates, and creating site mockups. These duties require you to work closely with back-end developers and stay updated on new technology, website development, and design trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a front end web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Front End Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, typically supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems such as Git, and an understanding of responsive design tools are highly valued. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration skills help developers build engaging and user-friendly interfaces. These skills ensure the delivery of functional, visually appealing, and accessible web applications that meet both user and business needs.

What are some common challenges front end web developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Front End Web Developers often collaborate closely with designers, back-end developers, and product managers, which can present challenges such as aligning design intentions with technical feasibility and managing differing priorities or timelines. Communication is key to ensuring designs are implemented as intended and that technical constraints are understood by all team members. Additionally, coordinating code integration and maintaining consistency across the user interface can require extra attention, especially in agile or fast-paced environments.

What is the difference between Front End Web Developer vs Web Designer?

Job description

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to be a hands-on builder on our new platform. You'll own meaningful pieces of the product end-to-end (from data model to UI) and partner closely with our Staff Engineer, product, and operations to ship software that real caregivers and schedulers use every day.
What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and ship full-stack features across our React/TypeScript frontend and Python/Django backend
  • Model new domains in Postgres and evolve the schema as we learn and buildout the system
  • Deploy and operate services on Azure (App Service / Container Apps, Postgres, Storage, Key Vault, etc.)
  • Write the tests, observability, and tooling that let us move quickly without breaking the flow of the people who depend on us
  • Collaborate on technical direction and raise the bar through code review and pairing
  • Mentor juniors and help facilitate growth in an increasingly difficult time for it
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years building and shipping production web applications
  • Strong full-stack range: comfortable in both TypeScript/React and Python (Django or similar)
  • Solid relational database instincts including schema design, query performance, and migrations
  • Experience running services in a major cloud (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP fine)
  • A bias toward simplicity, good taste in abstractions, and pragmatism about scope
  • Clear written and verbal communication. Can you explain a database migration to a caregiver coordinator and a scheduling edge case to a backend engineer, in roughly the same number of words?
Nice to Have
  • Experience in healthcare, home care, or another regulated domain (HIPAA, PHI handling)
  • Background replacing a legacy system or migrating off a low-code platform
  • Strong frontend craft (design sensibility, accessibility, performance)
  • Prior exposure to integrations with EHR or HRIS systems (AlayaCare, Rippling, etc.)
Logistics
• Hybrid - some days in office, some remote
• Reports to the Staff Engineer / engineering leadership
