The Medium Voltage Splicer is responsible for the installation, splicing, termination, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of medium voltage underground and overhead electrical distribution systems. This position requires extensive knowledge of medium voltage cable systems, industry safety practices, electrical theory, and utility construction methods. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills, a safety-first mindset, and the ability to work independently or as part of a construction team.

DUTIES & SCOPE:

  • Install, splice, terminate, and test medium voltage cable systems ranging from 5kV to 35kV.
  • Perform cable preparation, shield grounding, stress cone installations, and terminations in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Install and maintain underground conduit systems, duct banks, vaults, manholes, and pull boxes.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, cable schedules, and construction documents.
  • Conduct acceptance testing, fault locating, insulation resistance testing, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair damaged or failed medium voltage cable systems.
  • Assist with cable pulling operations and ensure proper installation practices are followed.
  • Install transformers, switches, sectionalizing cabinets, pad-mounted equipment, and associated medium voltage components.
  • Maintain compliance with NFPA 70E, OSHA regulations, customer requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Inspect work areas and identify potential hazards prior to beginning work.
  • Complete daily reports, quality control documentation, testing records, and as-built information.
  • Operate company vehicles, construction equipment, and specialized cable installation tools.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and testing instruments in good working condition.

MV Splicer Requirements/Knowledge: 

  • Knows the difference between 25KV and 35KV Terminations
  • Knows the difference between 600-amp and 900-amp dead break elbows.
  • Familiar with different types of dies and crimpers both Al & Cu.
  • Able to read and understand Single Line Drawing
  • Willing to do 600 volt work when MV is slow.
  • Knowledge about different types of MV terms and splices. ( Dead Break, Load Break, Live Front Term, Cold shrink Splice, Heat shrink splice.)
  • Understand what is a confined space is. Manhole work permit vs none permit.
  • Understands different MV cable 15kv, 35kv,
  • MV cable with a concentric neutral XLP cable
  • MV cable EPR copper tape shield 100% / 133% insulation
  • Has or willing to get NCSCB cert. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum of 3 years of medium voltage cable splicing experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with medium voltage cable systems from 5kV to 35kV.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical blueprints, one-line diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of cable preparation, splicing, termination, and testing procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Job requires working in all elements, depending on job location, time of year, heat, cold, rain, snow.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves always), respirator when required. 
  • Able to work 8-10 hours per day, 40 hours per week, overtime, and night shifts as required.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, including crawling, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, sitting, reaching, able to routinely lift heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds and pushing and pulling of objects is required.
  • Repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers.
  • Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.
