Senior Accountant – Multi-State Payroll & Tax Compliance1-Year Contract | $60,000–$70,000Are you the person who actually enjoys figuring out why a state tax account is wrong, where a filing went missing, or what needs to be registered when a company starts doing business in a new state?We are looking for a hands-on Senior Accountant / Multi-State Tax & Payroll Compliance Specialist to join our accounting team for a one-year contract assignment.This is not a routine accounting position. We need someone who can research complicated payroll and state tax issues, clean up historical problems, work directly with state agencies, and establish solid processes going forward.The right person can take an issue from “something does not look right” to researched, corrected, documented, and resolved.What You Will OwnMulti-state payroll tax registrations, including state withholding, SUTA/unemployment, Paid Family & Medical Leave, disability programs, and applicable local taxes.State agency accounts, portals, account numbers, tax rates, filing frequencies, and compliance deadlines.Payroll tax filings, reconciliations, amended returns, notices, penalties, and historical cleanup.Research payroll tax requirements as employees begin working in new states.Unemployment claims, agency correspondence, hearings, appeals, and incorrect account charges.Sales and use tax registrations, filings, reconciliations, and research.Review and maintenance of reseller, resale, and exemption certificates.Research of taxable, exempt, wholesale, resale, and use-tax transactions.State and local business registrations, licenses, annual reports, franchise taxes, gross receipts taxes, B&O taxes, and other state-specific requirements.Research and resolution of delinquent filings, duplicate accounts, incorrect tax rates, unapplied payments, missing returns, and other legacy compliance issues.Direct communication with state agencies and payroll providers to resolve discrepancies.Development of a centralized compliance calendar, state registration listing, and documentation for ongoing filings and renewals.What We Are Looking ForWe are looking for someone with strong experience in several of the following:Multi-state payroll and payroll taxesState withholding and SUTAPaid Family & Medical Leave programsSales and use taxResale and exemption certificatesState and local business registrationsUnemployment claimsState tax notices and correspondencePayroll and general ledger reconciliationsHistorical tax cleanupExcel and accounting systemsExperience with construction, contracting, field-service, or another business with employees or projects operating across multiple states is a strong plus.Who Will Be Successful HereYou are someone who:Enjoys researching and solving accounting and tax problems.Recognizes when something does not make sense and digs into it.Is comfortable researching state rules and contacting government agencies.Can manage multiple states, deadlines, accounts, and open issues at the same time.Keeps excellent documentation and follows issues through to completion.Can work independently without needing step-by-step direction.Understands both the accounting side and the compliance side of payroll and state taxes.Most importantly, we need a problem solver.If you enjoy taking a messy state tax issue, figuring out what happened, correcting it, reconciling the account, and getting it fully resolved, this may be the position for you.Work Environment and Physical Demands:The work environment is primarily office-based or home office-based but can include construction sites and construction or supply yards.
