Physician Opportunity In Clinical Informatics

Sansum Medical Group Santa Barbara, a part of Sutter Health, is seeking a Physician with an interest in Clinical Informatics to join our innovative and collaborative multispecialty group in Santa Barbara, CA.

This unique opportunity offers a blended role with 70% clinical practice and 30% informatics leadership, allowing physicians to maintain an active patient panel while driving meaningful improvements in clinical workflows, technology utilization, and patient care delivery.

Physicians from primary care, pediatrics, or subspecialty backgrounds with a strong ambulatory presence are encouraged to apply.

The Physician, Medical Director of Informatics serves as a physician leader and liaison between clinical teams, operations, and IT, supporting the optimization and adoption of electronic health records (EHR) and digital tools across the organization.

This role combines direct patient care (0.7 FTE) with clinical informatics leadership (0.3 FTE) to advance quality, efficiency, and provider experience.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical (0.7 FTE)

  • Provide comprehensive outpatient care in a primary care or specialty role
  • Develop and manage a patient panel in a team-based environment
  • Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care
  • Collaborate with specialists across a multispecialty group

Informatics Leadership (0.3 FTE)

  • Serve as a clinical informatics leader supporting EHR optimization and workflow design
  • Act as liaison between physicians, operations, and IT
  • Lead initiatives to improve clinical efficiency, usability, and outcomes
  • Support EHR governance, adoption, and system enhancements
  • Participate in system design, testing, training, and go-live support
  • Drive physician engagement and education related to digital tools
  • Lead provider EHR training initiatives for physicians and APCs
  • Support quality improvement and data-driven care initiatives
Qualifications
  • MD or DO
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in a relevant specialty (e.g., Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or other applicable specialties)
  • Active California medical license (or ability to obtain)
  • DEA certification

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active clinical practice experience in an ambulatory setting
  • Knowledge of ambulatory workflows in Epic
  • Strong understanding of clinical workflows and patient care delivery
  • Ability to collaborate across clinical, operational, and technical teams
  • Strong communication and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Clinical Informatics
  • Epic certification or advanced training (e.g., Smart User Badge, Builder Certification, or similar)
  • Experience with EHR optimization, workflow design, or health IT initiatives
  • Experience leading or supporting provider education and training initiatives
  • Leadership or committee involvement in informatics or quality improvement
