What are the typical challenges faced when working remotely as a LiDAR Data Processing Specialist?

One common challenge for remote LiDAR Data Processing Specialists is managing large datasets and ensuring stable internet connectivity for data transfers and cloud-based processing tools. Additionally, coordinating with project managers and GIS teams virtually requires strong communication skills to clarify project requirements and resolve data discrepancies. Staying updated on the latest software and maintaining data security from home are also important considerations. However, many organizations offer remote access to high-performance servers and collaborative platforms to support productivity and teamwork.

What is From Home Lidar Data Processing?

From Home Lidar Data Processing refers to the remote analysis and interpretation of Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) data using specialized software from a home office or remote location. Professionals in this role process raw Lidar point cloud data to produce accurate maps, 3D models, and other geospatial information for industries such as surveying, forestry, construction, and environmental monitoring. The job typically involves tasks such as filtering noise, classifying ground and non-ground points, and extracting features, all done through a computer with internet access, without needing to work onsite.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a From Home Lidar Data Processing Specialist, and why are they important?

To excel in From Home Lidar Data Processing, you need a solid background in geospatial analysis, remote sensing, and data management, typically supported by a degree in geography, GIS, or a related field. Familiarity with specialized software like LAStools, ArcGIS, and Global Mapper, as well as experience handling large datasets, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong self-motivation are important soft skills for ensuring data accuracy and meeting project deadlines independently. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering precise, reliable Lidar results while working remotely and collaborating effectively with distributed teams.

Job description

About Us
Burro is the leading robotics company in the world by number of robots working outdoors in the field with real customers. Our mission is to free people from tedious work and solve the critical labor shortages faced by farmers and others that work outdoors.
To accomplish our mission, we need a world-class, diverse team where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas. With this in mind, we strive to create a work environment where every employee can be themselves and express their perspective - this enables us to deliver the most creative and innovative solutions to problems our customers face.
Headquartered in Philadelphia with an office in central California, and backed by top Agtech and autonomy investors, including S2G, Cibus, FPrime, Toyota Ventures, FFVC, Xplorer, and Radicle, Burro was created to solve the labor shortages facing farmers using robotics.
We are seeking a Senior Robotics AI Engineer with strong applied machine learning and robotics experience to own and evolve the intelligence behind robot perception and navigation across complex indoor and outdoor sites. This is a hands-on, production focused role where you will design, deploy, optimise and maintain AI systems that directly impact how our robot perceive, reason and move.
The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of robotics and software engineering fundamentals, along with proven experience in deploying AI accelerated solutions in production environments.
Responsibilities
  • Own the development and productionization of ML systems, including model design, training, fine tuning, optimization, deployment and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and adapt models across multimodal inputs (e.g., camera, LiDAR) and other AI domains as product needs evolve.
  • Integrate ML outputs into the robotics stack, ensuring reliable performance under real-time and hardware constraints.
  • Investigate customer reported issues and drive root-cause analysis to improve system robustness.
  • Build and improve infrastructure for rapid experimentation, model iteration, evaluation and deployment.
  • Improve and scale data collection, labeling, preprocessing and validation pipelines to ensure high-quality training datasets.
  • Implement robust simulation and field testing workflows, along with production monitoring to detect drift and performance degradation.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product and Engineering to translate requirements into scalable AI solutions.

  • Master's degree or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in developing software for robotics and machine learning.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and C++.
  • Experience using ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar
  • Proven experience building, deploying and maintaining ML models in production, ideally on edge systems.
  • Hands-on experience working with camera and LiDAR data for perception and navigation tasks.
  • Experience with ML optimization and acceleration tools (e.g., TensorRT), including familiarity with quantization, pruning and other model compression techniques.
  • Strong problem solving mindset and comfort working across system boundaries.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex advanced concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Continual learning mindset and staying updated with the latest ML research and methodologies.

Nice To Haves
  • MLOps Experience (experiment tracking, dataset versioning)
  • Proficiency in ROS
  • Familiarity with Docker, Linux and production infrastructure environments

Perks
  • Competitive salary and benefits package (medical/dental/vision)
  • Early-Stage Equity
  • 401K Plan
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Paid parental leave

$160,000 - $180,000 a year
