Job description

About Insight Consulting Engineering (ICE):

Insight Consulting Engineering (ICE) provides engineering analysis for insurance property claims across the Midwest and Southwest. We specialize in evaluating residential and commercial damage resulting from weather events, vehicle impacts, fire, structural issues, and construction defects. We provide our clients with technical engineering analysis in layman's terms they can understand, rapid report turnaround, and high-quality customer service.

Position Summary:

Looking for an Engineering Graduate (Civil/Structural preferred) to assess property damage and write reports detailing the cause and extent of damage, along with scope of work for repairs. Construction experience not necessary but a plus. Need to be available to perform site inspections in Missouri and Kansas; can work from home and do not need to live in the Kansas City area but must be based locally enough to manage regional travel. Must provide own transportation to site inspections and must be physically fit and comfortable traversing sloped roofs to assess damage and locate leaks.

Must possess strong analytical ability, good writing ability, and customer service skills. Will receive on the job training and mentoring. Will be paid as a contractor for each site inspection (usually under 2 hours plus travel) and final report (usually four hours). The low end of the pay range listed below is for one inspection with report per week, with potential to increase up to several jobs per week in the future.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Field Assessments: Perform on-site inspections of residential and commercial properties (typically <2 hours per inspection) to evaluate structural and property damage, including photo documentation and measurements.
  • Damage Analysis: Determine the cause and extent of damage (e.g., wind, hail, fire, structural movement, tree or vehicle impact).
  • Technical Writing: Draft comprehensive and concise engineering reports detailing findings and recommended scopes of repair work, including photo documentation of damage (typically ~4 hours per report).
  • Client Interaction: Represent ICE with professionalism when interviewing property owners.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education & Credentials: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (E.I.T. preferred but not necessary, with ability to get P.E. license in the future).
  • Residency: Must be a U.S. citizen currently living in Missouri or Kansas.
  • Core Skills: Strong analytical abilities, good writing skills, and familiarity with Word or compatible writing software (no AI).
  • Mobility & Equipment: Reliable personal transportation for site visits, capable of carrying foldable ladder for roof inspections. Laptop or PC for writing reports.
  • Experience: Prior military or construction experience is a plus, but not required.

Compensation & Work Schedule:

  • Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
  • Pay Structure: Paid bi-weekly per job ($100 travel, $350 site inspection, $350 report) upon acceptance of final report.
  • Workload & Hours: Flexible, work-from-home schedule.
    • Initial Volume: Estimated at 1 inspection + report per week.
    • Growth Potential: Opportunity to scale up to several inspections/reports per week.
