EMPLOYMENT BEGINS: As soon as possible
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
• To provide a counseling and guidance program for students as an integrated part of their total personal, social, vocational, and educational development.
QUALIFICATIONS: Counselor Certification Required
Education/Certification:
• Master's Degree
• Texas Teaching Certificate
• Counselor Certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
• Have training in the fields of child abuse, parent education, ADHD, depression, divorce, victimization, self-esteem, social skills, conflict resolution, communication skills, 504, At-Risk, Dyslexia, and decision making skills.
• Exhibit excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
• Possess knowledge, understanding, and value of technology in public school education.
• Possess knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures of the MISD.
• Exhibit highly effective organizational and consensus building skills.
• Possess knowledge and understanding of the change process, organizational development, conflict resolution, and facilitation skills.
Experience:
• Successful experience in classroom teaching.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
• Assist in securing services and developing follow-up activities for students.
• Provide short term counseling as needed in overcoming personal and social problems.
• Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating the overall guidance program.
• Collect and disseminate educational and career information appropriate to student needs.
• Assist in the identification and referral of students.
• Assist in providing information from the home and school to enable better understanding and management of students.
• Assist the principal as a functional member of the campus ARD committee with particular responsibility for guidance suggestions if needed.
• Work closely with school nurse concerning health needs of students and in incidents of child abuse.
• Assist students and their parents in locating available and appropriate referral sources and maintain cooperative working relationships with these community agencies.
• Assist in intervention techniques enabling implementation of for student success.
• Assist in administering tests and evaluations when necessary.
• Deliver specialized programs when needed.
• Coordinate ADHD screenings.
• Assist in crisis prevention, intervention, and post intervention.
• Provide parenting information to community.
• Assist in development of behavior management plans.
• Availability for presentations for staff development, PTA, etc.
• Maintain efficient student records.
• Network with other counselors.
• Identify at-risk students.
• Work closely with teachers to plan and administer an appropriate course of study and/or remediation for at-risk students.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
