Clinical veterinarians can work from home one day per week.

Position Purpose

The Clinical Veterinarian provides clinical veterinary care for the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care accredited laboratory animal care and use program serving Wayne State University and the affiliated John D. Dingell Veterans Administration Medical Center, Detroit, MI. Serve as part of a team of veterinarians who support research and teaching programs. Reports to the Senior Director - Division of Laboratory Animal Resources.

Essential Functions

Provide clinical veterinary care and preventative medicine to research and teaching animals, including performing routine rounds and ill animal visits at multiple facilities, with a specific focus on care of non‑rodent species (ie pigs, rabbits, etc).

Provide overall functional supervision to staff. Assign duties, delegate responsibilities, check and evaluate work. Provide coaching, mentoring, and teaching.

Function as a back‑up for the other veterinarians. Clinical responsibilities include serving on a rotating on‑call basis to provide weekend and holiday medical coverage for emergencies or animal health related concerns.

Participate in general program management duties including review and authoring of standard operating procedures and Division of Lab Animal Research policies. Work with technicians and Division of Lab Animal Research management to address operational issues as they arise.

Participate in various Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee activities including review of animal use protocols and amendments, review and creation of policies, attendance at various regular Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee meetings and/or membership on the committee and assisting in the semi‑annual review of the animal care program.

Consult with investigative staff regarding protocol development, model selection, and technical training as needed.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited school or college of veterinary medicine.

Training in laboratory animal medicine with American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine board certification or eligibility for certification is highly preferred. Other board certifications such as American College of Veterinary Surgeons, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, etc. will be considered.

Additional degrees such as M.S. or Ph.D. are desirable. Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States and eligible to obtain veterinarian and controlled substance licenses in the state of Michigan within the first year of employment. Also requires United States Department of Agriculture accreditation or eligibility for accreditation.

Experience

Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience).

5 years of research-related veterinary experience in an academic environment, preferably in an Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care accredited program is preferred. Graduates or recent graduates from residency programs may be considered. Training or teaching experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Clinical veterinary medical skills in disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surgery involving a broad range of species common to laboratory animal research.

Knowledge of state and federal regulations and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care accreditation standards. Eligible to provide veterinary care support of a federal facility as a part of a veterinary care team.

Strong problem‑solving abilities including the ability to develop and monitor procedures for efficiency and accuracy. Proven ability to effectively supervise staff to attain organizational objectives.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively manage a variety of relationships with various stakeholders.

Demonstrated capacity for multi‑tasking, flexibility in the face of changing priorities, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external colleagues to gain full understanding of the desired outcome in order to produce high quality and consistent results with assistance of team members; and provide support to teammates when tackling complex projects.

Proficiency with standard office software such as Microsoft Office products and ability to learn new software skills, as needed.
