Job Summary
Face-to-face position to teach first- and second-year French courses. Our program is OER, communicative, task- and culture-based, and applies a decolonial lens. Some knowledge of gender-neutral language and Francophone Africa. We are looking for candidates who can teach one or two sections physically in the classroom, especially during the morning or afternoon. Evening sections are also available. Specific day and time are negotiable, but it should be noted that most of our classes are offered in the period between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. All our first-year French courses are in the hybrid format, so instructors who teach a first-year course are required to serve for one hour a week at the Center for Languages for conversation practices as part of their teaching load.
This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.
This position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Becomes familiar with and follows the current course curriculum outlines, and engages in accepted best pedagogical practices to maximize student learning.
Collaborates with the course lead/mentor and other instructors to ensure consistency in course syllabi, pedagogy, assignments, ePortfolio work, testing, grading, and so forth.
Supports the College's mission, vision, and values by incorporating appropriate cultural material representing a broad variety of ethnicities, national origins, socioeconomic groups and other identities, in additional to using inclusive pedagogical practices in the classroom.
Prepares and administers student assessments.
Provides appropriate and timely feedback.
Maintains accurate and complete student attendance records (for Financial Aid and Department purposes), grades, and other classroom documentation as applicable.
Grades must be maintained on the College's learning management system.
Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.
Informs students of progress to date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.
Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
Provides ADA accommodations as requested.
Completes required department paperwork on time.
Completes/attends required College, department, and program trainings; participates where possible in other trainings, as appropriate.
Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 business days).
Meets with course mentor and/or the hiring supervisor as needed.
Works closely with department peers and administrator to understand processes and procedures that lead to becoming a successful teacher.
Creates an effective, supportive learning environment for students regardless of delivery method.
Teaches courses consistent with department procedures, appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO) and catalog description.
Provides each student with a syllabus (paper or online) at the first class meeting that complies with department procedure and the CCO Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
Completes all required employee training.
Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.
Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.
Informs students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.
Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.

All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for on-line only courses.
You are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/ Instructor on a contract-to-contract basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment. Your employment may be terminated At Will at any time.
You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.
Minimum qualifications
M.A. in the target language (literature or culture), or a related language degree.
Native or advanced level of fluency in the target language.
Native or near-native level of fluency in English.
One year of experience teaching beginning or intermediate language at the college level.
Training in foreign language pedagogy and knowledge of best practices.
ESL instructors should apply to the ESL program, part of the School of Applied Technology and Technical Specialties.
Preferred Qualifications
1) M.A. or Ph.D. in the target language (literature, culture, or linguistics) or a related language degree.
2) Native level of fluency in the target language, or a ranking of Advanced-Mid or higher as scored by an official Oral Proficiency Interview of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
3) Knowledge of decolonial studies, gender-neutral language, and Francophone Africa.
4) Two or more years of experience teaching beginning and intermediate language at the college level.
5) Training in foreign language pedagogy and knowledge of best practices.
6) Skilled in the use of Canvas or other learning management systems.
7) Knowledge of and experience in computer-assisted learning, and online language instructional methodologies.
