Job Summary

The Transportation Manager is responsible for leading and optimizing all transportation operations across the company's private fleet and third-party carrier network. This role ensures the safe, compliant, and cost-effective movement of goods while delivering high levels of service to customers and internal stakeholders. The Transportation Manager oversees fleet operations, dispatch activities, carrier relationships, transportation planning, driver performance, and continuous improvement initiatives to achieve operational excellence.

Job Location

This is an onsite role based out of our site in either Egg Harbor City, NJ or Morristown, TN. 

Job Responsibilities

Transportation Operations Management

  • Direct daily transportation activities for both company-owned fleet assets and third-party transportation providers.
  • Manage dispatch operations to ensure efficient route planning, load optimization, and on-time deliveries.
  • Monitor transportation performance, capacity utilization, and service levels across all modes and carriers.
  • Develop transportation strategies that support business growth, customer requirements, and cost objectives.
  • Ensure seamless coordination between warehouse, customer service, planning, and transportation teams.

Fleet Management

  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of company-owned trucks, trailers, and transportation equipment.
  • Manage fleet utilization, routing efficiency, preventive maintenance schedules, and asset lifecycle planning.
  • Monitor driver performance, safety metrics, fuel consumption, and equipment productivity.
  • Implement programs to improve fleet reliability, equipment uptime, and transportation efficiency.

Third-Party Carrier Management

  • Manage relationships with brokers, carriers, and transportation service providers.
  • Source and negotiate transportation rates, contracts, and service agreements.
  • Monitor carrier performance through key performance indicators (KPIs) including on-time delivery, claims, cost, and service quality.
  • Develop contingency plans to address capacity constraints and transportation disruptions.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with all DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
  • Maintain transportation records, permits, licenses, and regulatory documentation.
  • Lead driver safety programs and transportation compliance initiatives.
  • Investigate transportation incidents, accidents, and service failures and implement corrective actions.

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage transportation operating budgets.
  • Analyze transportation costs and identify opportunities for cost reduction and process improvement.
  • Track freight spend, fleet expenses, maintenance costs, fuel costs, and carrier performance.
  • Support annual budgeting and transportation forecasting activities.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and develop transportation supervisors, dispatchers, drivers, and administrative support.
  • Establish performance expectations and accountability measures for transportation personnel.
  • Conduct performance reviews, coaching, and employee development activities.
  • Foster a culture of safety, customer service, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Continuous Improvement

  • Utilize transportation management systems (TMS), telematics, routing software, and performance analytics to drive operational improvements.
  • Implement process improvements to enhance service, reduce costs, and increase transportation efficiency.
  • Develop and monitor transportation KPIs and dashboards.
  • Lead projects related to network optimization, fleet expansion, technology implementation, and operational excellence.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Transportation, Business Administration, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of transportation, logistics, fleet management, or dispatch operations experience.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience managing transportation teams.
  • Experience managing both private fleet operations and third-party transportation providers.
  • Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and transportation compliance requirements.
  • Experience with TMS, routing software, telematics, and transportation analytics.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and negotiation abilities.
  • Experience within distribution, manufacturing, retail, food and beverage, or consumer goods industries preferred.

Compensation

  • Base salary is $100,000 - $125,000.
