What is a freelance?

Freelancers are self-employed professionals who offer their skills and services to multiple clients on a project or contract basis, rather than working exclusively for one employer. They have the flexibility to choose their clients, set their own rates, and determine their work schedule. Freelancers can work in a wide range of industries, including writing, graphic design, web development, marketing, and more. Many people choose freelancing for the independence and variety it provides, but it also requires managing your own business affairs, such as taxes and client relationships.

What jobs can I do as a freelance?

As a freelancer, you can work in various fields such as writing, graphic design, web development, programming, digital marketing, photography, and consulting. Freelance jobs often require specific skills, a portfolio, and the ability to manage your own schedule and clients. Many freelancers find work through online platforms and use tools like project management software to coordinate their projects.

What are examples of freelance jobs?

Freelance jobs include roles such as graphic designers, writers, web developers, photographers, and digital marketers. These positions often require specific skills, the use of tools like Adobe Creative Suite or coding languages, and the ability to work independently on flexible schedules.

What is the difference between Freelance vs Contract Worker?

AspectFreelanceContract Worker
CredentialsVaries; often self-taught or with specific skillsOften requires specific certifications or experience
Work EnvironmentIndependent, remote or on-site, project-basedUsually on-site or remote, for a set contract duration
Employer UsageHired directly or via platforms for individual projectsHired through agencies or directly for fixed-term roles

Contract workers are hired for specific periods or projects, sometimes through agencies, and may have more structured employment terms. Both roles require specialized skills but differ mainly in their work arrangements and contractual obligations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance professional?

To thrive as a Freelance professional, you need expertise in your chosen field, strong self-management abilities, and a proven track record or portfolio. Familiarity with project management tools, invoicing software, and digital communication platforms is typically required. Exceptional time management, adaptability, and networking skills help freelancers stand out and maintain a steady client base. These skills are crucial for efficiently delivering quality work, managing multiple clients, and sustaining a successful independent career.

What are some effective strategies for managing multiple clients and projects as a freelancer?

Managing several clients and projects simultaneously is a common challenge for freelancers. To stay organized, it’s essential to set clear expectations with clients, use project management tools to track deadlines, and prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. Regular communication and periodic check-ins help prevent misunderstandings and keep projects on schedule. Establishing boundaries around your availability also ensures a healthy work-life balance and maintains client satisfaction.

What does a freelance do?

Freelancers are self-employed. As a freelancer, you provide work to clients and invoice them for it. The type of clients you have depends on what kind of services you offer. Your clients can be individuals or companies. A full-time freelancer often has assignments from multiple clients at once. Some common services that people provide as freelancers are: writing, editing, graphic design, web design, marketing, programming, accounting, and bookkeeping. Freelancing is ideal for those who prefer to be their own boss and are willing to market themselves to meet their income goals.

The ideal candidate has exceptional writing skills, a keen eye for detail, a passion for nailing brand voice, and takes direction well.

At the moment, the most common assignment that writers as part of this freelance network can expect is writing SEO-optimized blog posts (800-1000 words). However, freelance writers may work on a range of projects, including, but not limited to: blog posts, webpages, emails, infographics, e-books, white papers, and more.

Writing assignments vary on topic and industry, so applicants must be comfortable adapting to fit the assignment’s needs and specifications. Applicants with expertise writing for the B2B, technology, associations, e-commerce, and/or education industries are preferred.

As part of the freelance writer network, the number of assignments per month may vary based on needs. We’re looking for writers who can be flexible and adaptable.

Please note that our content creation standards prohibits the use of any AI content generation tools in the writing process.

Applicants will be required to send a portfolio link or writing samples for review. Please ensure your portfolio and/or samples showcase professional experience.

What You'll Do

  • Write excellent, polished content that suits every assignment’s specifications, including: brand voice and tone, length, research needed, internal links and external links, meta data, citing sources, and more
  • Adhere to directions and deadlines consistently
  • Update content as needed based on editorial feedback
  • Communicate your bandwidth clearly in advance

What You Need

  • A W-9 or W8-BEN to put on file
  • A PayPal account for submitting invoices and receiving payment
  • Excellent writing skills with incredible attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Prior content marketing creation experience a plus, specifically with agencies
  • SEO knowledge a plus
  • Familiarity with project management platforms (like Basecamp and Asana) a plus
Employment Type: FULL_TIME
