What is a freelance web developer?

A freelance web developer is an independent professional who designs, builds, and maintains websites for clients on a project or contract basis, rather than working as a full-time employee for a single company. They often work with a range of clients, including businesses, organizations, and individuals, offering services such as website creation, updates, troubleshooting, and optimization. Freelance web developers typically manage their own schedules, find their own clients, and may specialize in areas like front-end, back-end, or full-stack development. They use a variety of programming languages and tools depending on the requirements of each project. This career offers flexibility, but also requires self-motivation and strong communication skills to manage client relationships effectively.

What does a freelance web developer do?

Freelance web developers create eye-catching and user-friendly websites to generate web traffic and promote their clients' products and services. Unlike staff web developers, freelance web developers are independent contractors who may work for an individual or business on a short- or long-term basis. As a freelance web developer, you determine your target audience based on your client's customer base and design a website to attract new customers and keep current customers interested. You may also meet with your client to ensure you understand their expectations and wants for their website. When developing a design, you may collaborate with a team to create a new site or find ways to improve an existing one. Functionality and aesthetic appeal are your two primary goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often frameworks such as React or Vue, supported by a solid portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, content management systems (e.g., WordPress), and basic SEO or web analytics tools is typically expected. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear client communication are crucial soft skills for managing multiple projects and building client relationships. These qualities are essential for delivering high-quality work independently, meeting client expectations, and sustaining a successful freelance business.

How do freelance web developers typically manage client communication and project expectations?

Freelance web developers often handle all aspects of client communication themselves, from initial consultations to project delivery and support. Effective communication is crucial for understanding client goals, setting clear timelines, and managing expectations regarding deliverables and revisions. Many freelancers use project management tools, regular progress updates, and detailed contracts to ensure both parties are aligned throughout the process. This proactive approach helps prevent misunderstandings and builds strong client relationships, which are essential for repeat business and referrals.

Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right professional for their project needs.

Can a freelance web developer be a freelancer?

A freelance web developer is by definition a freelancer who works independently on web development projects for clients. They typically set their own schedules, use skills like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and may obtain certifications to demonstrate expertise. Being a freelancer allows for flexible work arrangements and self-management of projects.

How much money do freelance web developers make?

Freelance web developers' earnings vary based on experience, skills, and project complexity, but they typically charge hourly rates ranging from $25 to $150 or more. Many earn between $50,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on workload and client base, with experienced developers often commanding higher rates for specialized skills like front-end or back-end development.

Job description

Job Title: Web Designer
Reports To: Web Developer
Classification: Exempt
Job Type: Full-Time
Location: NYC Hybrid

This is a hybrid position that includes working from our Times Square office at least three days per week.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the philanthropic heart of Broadway, bringing together the theater community and its audiences to help people across the country receive lifesaving medications, healthcare, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance.

Job Summary:

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the philanthropic heart of Broadway, is seeking a web designer who lives at the intersection of design and development. You are a graphic designer who specializes in web and digital media — someone who knows web color standards and image formats cold, can hand off clean files to a developer and cares as much about how an email renders on a phone as how it looks on a computer.

This role serves as the bridge between our graphic designers and web developer. You will create the digital experiences that connect us with supporters and donors — including email campaigns, responsive web pages and the look of our online presence — while collaborating closely with our developer to bring original designs to life in-house.

Duties/Responsibilities: Web and Email Design
  • Design responsive, standards-compliant Mailchimp email layouts based on project needs

  • Redesign and modernize existing Mailchimp templates to keep Broadway Cares’ communications fresh, effective and on-brand

  • Develop wireframes and finished designs for new responsive WordPress pages

  • Design original WordPress themes to be developed in-house in collaboration with the web developer

  • Apply responsive design and accessibility standards to create inclusive experiences

  • Help maintain the design and visual consistency of broadwaycares.org and dradance.org

Digital Production and Development Collaboration
  • Optimize and process image and design files for web, email and social media, including GIF, JPG, PNG, PSD, AI, INDD and PDF files

  • Ensure digital assets meet appropriate file-size, dimensional, color and quality standards across platforms and formats

  • Prepare and deliver clean, organized, developer-ready design files and assets

  • Collaborate closely with the web developer to translate original designs into functional digital experiences

  • Test and refine designs across desktop and mobile devices, email clients and web browsers

  • Identify and help resolve design, production and rendering issues

Project Collaboration and Execution
  • Translate creative and marketing needs into wireframes, design concepts and finished digital experiences

  • Work with the communications, development and production teams to meet marketing, promotional, media and event deadlines

  • Manage multiple projects while maintaining accuracy, organization and attention to detail

  • Participate actively in project planning, review and problem resolution

Additional Design Responsibilities

When not focused on web and email design, the web designer will:

  • Support the in-house graphic designers and video editor across a range of digital and print projects

  • Collaborate on social media campaigns, event banners, posters, postcards, invitations, signage, program ads and other materials

  • Help catalog, organize and manage the organization’s graphic, photographic and video assets

  • Assist with ongoing design maintenance and updates across Broadway Cares’ websites

Organizational Responsibilities
  • Participate with the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS staff in facilitating audience appeals that traditionally take place on Broadway during two six-week fundraising periods each year, including evenings and weekends

  • Participate in fundraising events, some of which occur during evenings and weekends

  • Support the organization’s mission and contribute to a collaborative, inclusive and respectful workplace

The responsibilities listed above are not exhaustive and may evolve as the role develops. The individual in this position will also be expected to take on additional ad hoc tasks, responsibilities, and projects as assigned by the manager, adapting to the dynamic needs of the team and organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • One to two years of professional web or digital design experience, preferably with an in-house creative team, agency or nonprofit organization, or as a full-time freelancer

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating web, email and digital design work, with a finely tuned eye for typography, layout, color and composition

  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, web image formats and web color standards, including the ability to optimize assets for size and quality

  • Experience designing responsive emails in Mailchimp or a comparable platform and a solid understanding of responsive web and mobile standards

  • Familiarity with WordPress theme design, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and web accessibility standards, including WCAG

  • Ability to translate creative and marketing requests into wireframes, finished designs and clean, developer-ready files

  • Exceptional organizational, communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced creative environment

  • A comprehensive understanding of and commitment to Broadway Cares’ mission

  • An affection for dogs

Preferred Skills
  • Experience designing content for social media

  • Familiarity with video editing, motion graphics or animation

  • Knowledge of printing and prepress procedures

Some of the benefits of working at Broadway Cares:
  • Generous Vacation and PTO policy

  • Defined benefit pension plan in addition to a 401K plan

  • Health benefit plan that includes health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance
