Freelance User Interface Tester information

What is a freelance user interface tester?

A Freelance User Interface Tester is a professional who evaluates and tests the design and functionality of user interfaces in software, websites, or applications on a contract or per-project basis. Their role is to identify usability issues, bugs, and inconsistencies to ensure a smooth and user-friendly experience. They work independently for multiple clients, providing feedback and detailed reports to help developers improve the product's interface. Freelance UI testers often use various devices and browsers to simulate real-world usage and catch potential problems before release.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance user interface tester?

A Freelance User Interface Tester needs a solid understanding of usability principles, attention to detail, and experience with web and mobile application testing. Familiarity with testing tools like Selenium, BrowserStack, or TestRail, as well as knowledge of bug tracking systems, is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and time management skills help testers provide clear feedback and manage multiple projects efficiently. These abilities ensure that interfaces are user-friendly, functional, and meet client expectations in a competitive digital landscape.

How do freelance user interface testers typically manage communication and feedback with remote development teams?

Freelance User Interface Testers frequently collaborate with remote development teams using project management tools, video calls, and instant messaging platforms. Clear and consistent communication is crucial, as testers need to report usability issues, share feedback, and sometimes demonstrate bugs in real time. They often join daily or weekly stand-ups and provide written reports or annotated screenshots to ensure their findings are understood. Building effective communication channels not only streamlines the testing process but also helps freelancers establish trust and long-term relationships with clients.

About GLS US

GLS US provides parcel delivery throughout the Western US, Texas, and Colorado with fast, dependable service built around the needs of businesses and their customers. From first-mile pickup to final-mile delivery, our network is designed for speed, consistency, and exceptional customer experiences.

People are at the center of everything we do. As the first company in the logistics industry to earn the Employer of Choice designation, we're committed to creating a workplace where employees are valued, supported, and empowered to grow. We believe our success starts with investing in our people and fostering a culture built on collaboration, teamwork, and respect.

GLS US is part of GLS Group, a leading international parcel delivery network operating in more than 50 countries. Together, we combine the agility and personalized service of a regional provider with the strength, stability, and global expertise of an international logistics organization.

Position Summary: The UI/UX Designer is responsible for researching, analyzing, designing, and improving user experience across GLS digital products. This role works closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, Developers, and stakeholders to translate business requirements and user needs into intuitive, accessible, and visually engaging user experiences. The UI/UX Designer conducts user research, creates wireframes and prototypes, validates designs through usability testing, and ensures consistency with the organization's design standards.

Reporting to the VP of IT Services and partnering closely with the Product Manager, this position plays a key role in defining the GLS US digital products while ensuring consistency, usability, and accessibility across the organization. This individual operates within a leadership structure that extends from the VP of IT Services to the CTO of North America, ensuring alignment with the enterprise technology strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

User Experience Research

Conduct user research through interviews, surveys, usability testing, and stakeholder workshops.

Analyze user behavior, customer feedback, analytics, and support requests to identify usability issues and opportunities for improvement.

Create user personas, journey maps, empathy maps, and user flows.

Recommend UX improvements based on research findings and industry best practices.

User Interface Design

Design wireframes, mockups, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity UI designs for web and mobile applications.

Create intuitive, user-centered interfaces that align with business objectives.

Ensure designs follow accessibility (WCAG), usability, and responsive design principles.

Maintain visual consistency with GLS branding and design standards.

Design System & Component Library

Develop, maintain, and evolve the GLS US Design System.

Create reusable UI components, templates, interaction patterns, and design guidelines that promote consistency across all digital products.

Partner with Engineering to ensure design components are implemented accurately and remain synchronized with development.

Establish standards for typography, spacing, color palettes, iconography, accessibility, and interaction behaviors.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Collaborate closely with Product Managers to understand business goals, prioritize features, and define user experience requirements.

Collaborate with Customer Service, Sales, and Operations to understand user needs and translate them into actionable design and development requirements.

Partner with Engineering throughout implementation to ensure design fidelity and technical feasibility.

Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and design reviews.

Facilitate design workshops and brainstorming sessions with cross-functional teams.

Continuous Improvement

Continuously evaluate existing products and identify opportunities to improve user experience.

Use customer feedback, analytics, heatmaps, and usability metrics to drive product enhancements.

Advocate for customer-centric design across the organization.

Introduce modern UX methodologies, emerging technologies, and industry best practices to improve design maturity.

Contribute to the evolution of GLS US digital experience standards and long-term UX strategy for customer-facing digital platforms, including shipper portals, tracking experiences, and self-service tools.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience Design, Graphic Design, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).

3-6 years of professional experience designing digital products for web and mobile applications.

Strong portfolio demonstrating user-centered design methodology, problem-solving, and end-to-end product design.

Advanced proficiency in Figma, including components, auto-layout, variables, and prototyping.

Experience designing enterprise SaaS or customer-facing digital platforms.

Strong understanding of UX research methodologies and usability testing.

Experience building and maintaining scalable design systems and component libraries.

Preferred

Experience in logistics, shipping, e-commerce, or supply chain technology environments.

Familiarity with frontend technologies (React, Angular, or Vue.js) including HTML, CSS and JavaScript to facilitate collaboration with development teams

Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and inclusive design principles.

Experience working within Agile/Scrum delivery frameworks.

Exposure to A/B testing, analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Hotjar), or data-driven design methodologies.

Familiarity with DevOps practices including CI/CD pipelines and version control (Git).

Work Environment & Conditions

Primarily office-based or hybrid; remote work arrangements considered based on role performance and business needs.

Occasional off-hours availability may be required to coordinate with offshore resources in differing time zones.

Travel to GLS US facilities or partner sites may be required on a limited basis
