What is a freelance test manager?

Freelance Test Managers are professionals who oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of software testing activities on a contract or project basis rather than as full-time employees. They are responsible for ensuring that software systems meet quality standards and function as intended by managing test teams, defining test strategies, and reporting on test progress. Freelance Test Managers often work with multiple clients, offering flexibility and specialized expertise for various projects. Their work typically involves collaborating with developers, business analysts, and other stakeholders to deliver reliable software products within deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance test manager?

To thrive as a Freelance Test Manager, you need expertise in software testing methodologies, test planning, and quality assurance, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test management tools such as JIRA, HP ALM, and certifications like ISTQB are typically required. Strong communication, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for managing remote teams and client expectations. These skills ensure the successful delivery of high-quality software products and client satisfaction in a freelance environment.

What are some common challenges freelance test managers face when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance Test Managers often juggle projects for different clients, which can present challenges such as managing overlapping deadlines, adapting to varied testing tools, and aligning with diverse team cultures and processes. Effective communication and organization are key, as you may need to quickly understand new domains and ensure consistent quality across all engagements. Building strong relationships with client teams and setting clear expectations helps smooth collaboration and prevent misunderstandings.

The main difference is that a Freelance Test Manager oversees testing projects, manages teams, and coordinates testing efforts independently, often with strategic responsibilities. A QA Tester focuses on executing test cases, identifying bugs, and ensuring software quality at a more operational level. Both roles require testing knowledge, but the Test Manager has broader project and team management duties.

We believe our differences are our strength. So we push for inclusion, challenge convention and bring in new perspectives, to inspire new ideas. Because when we connect by understanding what makes people different, we can create unforgettable experiences that enrich lives. Join us at razorfish.com.
Overview
3+ month engagement. Freelancers will be considered for contract extension as well as conversion to fulltime based on performance and budget.
Razorfish's Strategy & Performance team is looking for a Performance Strategist with strong business intuition, a collaborative spirit, and a knack for simplifying the complex. This person will be working on data-driven marketing initiatives to help increase and improve acquisition, unify client teams around learning plans, and scale client's success. An eye for operational excellence will be key; this team is responsible for active management of consumer research, testing roadmaps, seamless test execution, and leading strategic analysis.
The ideal candidate will want to roll up their sleeves to get things done, but also know how to empower other cross-functional agency teams to deliver their best work. They will use current data, historical data, business objectives and UX best practices to make informed recommendations that will have a large impact on performance.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as performance marketing strategist, advising internal teams and stakeholders on how to set KPIs, design tests/optimizations, and achieve business outcomes accordingly
  • Partner with cross-functional PLC stakeholders to understand LOBs priorities, challenges and translate those findings into executable recommendations
  • Build creative briefs for integrated campaigns as well as simpler CRM-campaigns or journeys
  • Proactively identify gaps + opportunities across creative, media and experience touchpoints by analyzing data and funnel metrics; develop and test new methodologies, technologies, or approaches to find potential conversion optimizations
  • Lead and manage day-to-day testing and optimization, with a focus on digital acquisition across paid and owned channels
  • Lead key client conversations and discussions related to testing priorities, goals and impact
  • Elevate and complement the work of our Brand and Experience Strategists, lending a data and performance POV to brand briefs (examples include paid social campaigns, email redesign)
  • Partner with Media (display, SEM, social, and search), Data and Creative heads to ensure we are continuously applying full funnel best practices to our work
  • Support the growth and vision of Razorfish Strategy by contributing to department leadership, thought leadership, and mentoring junior team members
  • Communicate results and insights to internal and client stakeholders, actively applying those to future tests and experiments

Qualifications
  • 7-9 years of relevant experience with digital channels and performance marketing, as a guide
  • Passionate about finding insights and challenging the status quo; obsession for getting under the skin of a business (the numbers), understanding how it works and makes money
  • Experience in performance marketing campaign development and optimization, including but not limited to: CRM, email design and user experience, Online video campaign, social and display marketing campaigns, paid search (SEM), and digital analytics
  • Experience with audience targeting, campaign briefs, dynamic creative optimization (DCO), conversion rate optimization, A/B testing
  • Strong team player; knows how to influence and empower others
  • Excellent presentation and negotiation skills; can take complex concepts and simplify for various client and internal audiences
  • Tact, diplomacy, maturity in relating and interacting with people at all levels
  • Desire to elevate and apply their own work experience beyond a singular media channel or function
  • Advanced PPT and Excel skills required
  • Experience with marketing technology vendors such as Google and Adobe
  • Knowledge of research tools: MRI, GWI, Epsilon, comScore, Pathmatics, Vivvix, iSpot, eMarketer, Mintel
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills
