What is a freelance tactical operator?

A freelance tactical operator is a security professional who provides specialized tactical services on a contract or temporary basis, rather than being employed full-time by a single organization. These operators are often hired for security consulting, protection services, crisis response, or training roles, and may work with private companies, NGOs, or government agencies. Their backgrounds typically include military, law enforcement, or specialized security training, and they must be adaptable to diverse and challenging environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance tactical operator?

To thrive as a Freelance Tactical Operator, you need advanced tactical training, situational awareness, and often a background in law enforcement, military, or security operations. Familiarity with firearms, surveillance equipment, GPS navigation, and relevant certifications such as firearms licenses or private security credentials is typically required. Exceptional decision-making, stress management, and teamwork skills help individuals stand out in high-pressure and unpredictable environments. These competencies ensure mission success, personal safety, and effective collaboration during complex security operations.

What are some common challenges freelance tactical operators face when working with multiple clients or teams?

Freelance tactical operators often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to different team dynamics, understanding diverse operational protocols, and managing varying expectations from multiple clients. Each assignment may require rapid assessment of new environments and coordination with unfamiliar personnel, which demands strong communication and flexibility. Additionally, balancing multiple projects can lead to scheduling conflicts and increased pressure, so effective time management and clear contract terms are essential for long-term success in this role.

Director of Marketing

Burro

Philadelphia, PA

$150K - $170K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Job description

Burro is the leading robotics company in the world by number of robots working outdoors in the field with real customers. Our mission is to free people from tedious work and solve the critical labor shortages faced by farmers and others that work outdoors.

To accomplish our mission, we need a world-class, diverse team where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas. With this in mind, we strive to create a work environment where every employee can be themselves and express their perspective - this enables us to deliver the most creative and innovative solutions to problems our customers face.

Headquartered in Philadelphia with an office in central California, and backed by top Agtech and autonomy investors, including S2G, Catalyst, Translink, Cibus, FPrime, Toyota Ventures, FFVC, Xplorer, and Radicle, Burro was created to solve the labor shortages facing farmers using robotics.

Burros can be described as Disney's Wall-E for agriculture and work outdoors, in a 1.0 format.  They function, today, as computer vision based autonomous ground vehicles for carrying, towing, and scouting, and are designed to lay the base for the fully autonomous future of work outdoors.  We have a growing triple digit fleet deployed in paid commercial use within vineyards, nurseries, berries, and beyond, and demand for our product is accelerating, so we are growing our team.

Burro is seeking a Director of Marketing to help take our marketing function to its next stage. In this role, you'll be responsible for evaluating an early-stage function and turning it into a repeatable, scalable engine. The ideal candidate thrives in the space where high-level strategy meets hands-on execution. This role reports to our Chief Revenue Officer and will be a key hire for the go-to-market team.

Responsibilities:
  • Assess what's working in Burro's current marketing efforts and build a clear strategy and infrastructure roadmap to scale qualified pipeline: systems, team, and execution.

  • Sharpen and evolve our brand positioning and messaging across a technical multi-persona audience of growers, ag and industrial operations leaders, and dealers.

  • Own demand generation: expand and professionalize campaigns across digital, field/trade shows, content, and partnerships to drive qualified pipeline.

  • Partner closely with Sales to align marketing programs with revenue targets and pipeline goals.

  • Mature the marketing tech stack, reporting, and attribution models to measure what's working and cut what isn't.

  • Manage external agencies, freelancers, and a growing in-house team as the function scales.

  • Represent the Burro brand at industry events, trade shows, and in the field with growers, translating authentic customer insights into marketing narrative

  • Balance long-range brand and category strategy with the tactical, hands-on work needed at an early-stage company.

Requirements:
  • 7+ years in marketing, with direct experience scaling a marketing function beyond its early foundation at an early-stage or high-growth company.

  • A track record of being both strategic and tactical: you can set the roadmap and also execute the campaign, or run the event yourself.

  • Experience building demand generation and brand programs in a technical, B2B, or industrial/agricultural context (or comparable complex-sale environment).

  • Comfortable operating with limited resources and ambiguity, and a bias toward shipping and iterating over perfecting.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical robotics/autonomy concepts for a non-technical audience.

  • Willingness to spend time in the field with growers and operations teams to understand the product and the customer firsthand.

  • Genuine excitement about agriculture, robotics, and Burro's mission.

  • Experience with tools like HubSpot

Nice-To-Haves:
  • Early-stage startup experience or a strong affinity for thriving in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment.

  • A blend of in-house brand/growth leadership alongside early-career agency experience.

  • Direct experience marketing robotics, autonomous systems, agtech, heavy machinery, or industrial solutions.

  • Experience building co-marketing programs, enablement tools, or messaging for third-party dealer and distributor networks.

  • Hands-on familiarity with modern B2B marketing stacks (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce, Google Analytics, digital ad platforms).

  • Track record of leveraging customer case studies, field stories, and earned media/PR to build category authority.

Perks
  • Competitive salary and benefits package (medical/dental/vision)

  • 401K Plan

  • Early-stage equity

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Paid parental leave

$150,000 - $170,000 a year
