Job description

User Experience Designer - (9114)

Employment Type: Freelance

Work Arrangement: Remote

Assignment Dates: September 14, 2026 - September 12, 2027

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced User Experience Designer to help shape and scale a design system supporting digital products across web and mobile platforms. In this role, you will create reusable design foundations, improve component consistency, and enable product teams to deliver accessible, high-quality experiences more efficiently.

You will work closely with product designers, engineers, product leaders, and accessibility partners to translate shared design patterns into practical, well-documented solutions. This opportunity is ideal for a systems-minded designer who has actively contributed to building, evolving, or governing a design system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and refine reusable UI components, interaction patterns, and shared assets in Figma.
  • Develop scalable design solutions that improve consistency across product teams and digital channels.
  • Maintain component libraries, variants, auto-layout structures, and shared design resources.
  • Create clear documentation, usage guidance, standards, and best practices for design-system adoption.
  • Partner with engineering teams to align design components with production implementations.
  • Identify and resolve gaps between design artifacts, coded components, and user experience standards.
  • Apply responsive, accessible, and inclusive design principles to reusable patterns and components.
  • Participate in design critiques, contribution reviews, governance activities, and release planning.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to prioritize system improvements and adoption opportunities.
  • Evaluate emerging tools and workflows that improve design efficiency and design-to-development collaboration.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of UX, product design, or digital experience design experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience building, maintaining, or materially evolving a design system.
  • Advanced Figma proficiency, including components, variants, auto-layout, and shared libraries.
  • Experience designing reusable component libraries, shared patterns, and scalable interface foundations.
  • Strong understanding of component architecture, design-system principles, and modern product design practices.
  • Experience creating documentation, standards, and usage guidance that support design-system adoption.
  • Proven ability to collaborate directly with engineers on component implementation and consistency.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility, inclusive design, and responsive design across web and mobile experiences.
  • Experience working in cross-functional environments with design, engineering, product, and accessibility partners.
  • A portfolio demonstrating systems thinking and substantive contributions to reusable design foundations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting design systems across web, iOS, and Android platforms.
  • Knowledge of design tokens, contribution models, governance processes, or release management.
  • Familiarity with modern design-to-code workflows and collaborative product development practices.
  • Experience with AI-assisted design or development workflows, automation, prompt-based tools, or related emerging technologies.

What We're Looking For

  • Systems-oriented: You approach design challenges with an eye toward repeatability, maintainability, and long-term product quality.
  • Collaborative: You build strong working relationships and create alignment across design, engineering, product, and accessibility disciplines.
  • Quality-focused: You recognize that successful systems require documentation, implementation alignment, governance, and adoption-not only polished components.
  • Adaptable: You stay current on evolving tools, workflows, and practices, applying them thoughtfully to improve outcomes.

Candidate Screening Priorities

  • Direct experience building, maintaining, governing, or significantly evolving a design system.
  • Advanced expertise with Figma components, shared libraries, variants, and auto-layout.
  • Strong design-to-development collaboration and experience aligning design assets with coded components.
  • Experience producing design-system documentation, standards, contribution guidance, or governance materials.
  • Practical application of accessibility and responsive design principles.
  • Cross-platform experience spanning web and mobile products.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted or emerging design workflows as an added differentiator. Important Note

Candidates should demonstrate active ownership or meaningful contribution to a design system. Experience solely using an established design system to create product screens is not equivalent to experience building, maintaining, documenting, governing, or improving shared components and patterns.
