Freelance Software Engineer Startup information

What is a freelance software engineer at a startup?

A Freelance Software Engineer at a startup is an independent contractor who develops, tests, and maintains software solutions for new or growing companies. Unlike full-time employees, freelancers work on a project or hourly basis and may support multiple startups simultaneously. Their work often involves building prototypes, scaling products, or implementing new features quickly to meet the fast-paced needs of startups. Freelancers bring specialized expertise and flexibility, which can be vital for startups looking to innovate and adapt rapidly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance software engineer at a startup?

To thrive as a Freelance Software Engineer at a startup, you need strong programming skills, experience with software development lifecycles, and a portfolio demonstrating previous project success, often backed by a relevant degree or certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and agile project management tools is common. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective communication set top freelancers apart in this dynamic environment. These skills and qualities ensure you can deliver high-quality solutions, adapt quickly to changing requirements, and collaborate successfully with lean startup teams.

What are some common challenges freelance software engineers face when working with startups, and how can they overcome them?

Freelance software engineers working with startups often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing project requirements, tight deadlines, and limited resources. Startups may pivot their business models, requiring engineers to adapt quickly and learn new technologies or frameworks on the fly. To overcome these challenges, it’s important to maintain clear and regular communication with stakeholders, set realistic expectations, and use agile methodologies to manage changing priorities. Building a strong professional network can also provide support and collaboration opportunities when navigating the fast-paced startup environment.

Job description

Job Summary:
Range is building AI-powered wealth management that actually works. They are seeking a software engineer who understands user problems, architects solutions, and ships them quickly, contributing to the company's growth and innovation in financial management.
Responsibilities:
• Understand the user's problem, architect a solution, and ship it.
• Use AI workflows to move faster alongside the team and customers, bringing the best solutions to life.
• Define how engineering operates by figuring out what's possible when a great engineer leans into AI.
• Produce high-quality, impactful work that drives team success.
• Take full ownership, proactively identifying and addressing challenges while staying focused on solutions.
• Lead by example with positivity, reframing setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.
• Collaborate openly through radical transparency, ensuring alignment and trust among teammates and stakeholders.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Deep expertise in TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, or other programming languages
• Extensive experience designing, building, and operating production systems on AWS or similar cloud platforms (EC2, ECS, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch)
• Proven ability to work across the stack — frontend, backend, infrastructure — and make sound tradeoffs between them
• Track record of leading technical projects that span multiple services or systems
• Experience defining technical direction for a team, including architecture decisions, tooling choices, and engineering standards
• Proven ability to architect, debug, and ship using AI development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) — not just prompting, but knowing when the output is wrong, why, and how to fix it
• Strong communication skills — you can align engineers and stakeholders around a technical approach
Preferred:
• Experience designing scalable, high-availability distributed systems
• Experience building and maintaining complex web applications with React and TypeScript at scale
• Excellent product instincts — you partner with product and design to shape what gets built, not just how
• Ability to take a loosely defined business problem and drive it to a well-scoped technical solution
• Track record of raising the bar for engineering quality across a team (testing practices, observability, incident response)
• Security engineering experience
• Fintech experience
• Startup experience
Company:
Range is an AI wealthtech platform that provides wealth management and financial advisory services. Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in Mclean, USA, with a team of 51-200 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
