What is a freelance smart home automation specialist?

A Freelance Smart Home Automation specialist is an independent professional who designs, installs, configures, and maintains smart home devices and systems for clients. They work with technologies such as smart lighting, security cameras, thermostats, voice assistants, and other connected devices to enhance home comfort, convenience, and security. Unlike employees of a specific company, freelancers work on a project basis for various clients, offering tailored solutions to fit individual needs and budgets. They may also provide troubleshooting, upgrades, and integration services for existing smart home setups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance smart home automation specialist?

To excel as a Freelance Smart Home Automation Specialist, you need strong knowledge of electrical systems, networking, IoT devices, and relevant programming or configuration skills, often supported by certifications like CEDIA or CompTIA. Familiarity with platforms such as Control4, Crestron, SmartThings, and tools for system integration and troubleshooting is essential. Outstanding problem-solving, client communication, and project management skills set top professionals apart. These abilities ensure seamless installation, customization, and support, leading to high client satisfaction and reliable smart home solutions.

What are some common challenges freelance smart home automation professionals face when managing multiple client projects?

Freelance smart home automation professionals often juggle several projects at once, each with unique client requirements, device compatibilities, and network environments. Additionally, freelancers must manage their own schedules, client communications, and sometimes unexpected on-site issues, all of which require strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Building a network of reliable suppliers and maintaining clear documentation for every project helps mitigate these challenges.

About Daisy

At Daisy, we're pioneering the future of smart spaces - making homes and businesses more connected, comfortable, and enjoyable through technology. As the first national smart space installation and services company, we're bringing best-in-class technology solutions to the Minneapolis area.

From networking and Wi-Fi to audio, video, lighting, shading, security, and home automation, we design, install, and support technology that just works.

Why You'll Love This Role

Daisy is a national company with strong centralized technical and commercial support. Our technicians have access to a dedicated technical support team, ongoing training, equipment documentation, and established relationships with leading manufacturers.

This is a founding Lead Technician role for our Minneapolis location.

You'll work directly with the local owner to help launch and grow the business. You'll lead installations, manage projects in the field, help establish installation standards, and play a key role in building our Minnesota team. The position will begin part-time, with the opportunity to transition to full-time as we build the business.

If you're looking for more responsibility than just installation work, this is an opportunity to help build something from the ground up.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Install, configure, and service integrated AV, lighting, shades, networking, cameras, and home automation systems

  • Serve as the on-site point of contact, interacting professionally with clients, builders, designers, contractors, and trade partners.

  • Install and terminate low-voltage cabling, panels, and junction boxes

  • Troubleshoot audio, video, networking, and control systems

  • Interpret project blueprints and system schematics to execute installations accurately

  • Ensure clean, code-compliant, and high-performance installations

  • Coordinate projects from installation through completion and communicate progress with customers and the Daisy team

  • Maintain a clean company vehicle, tools, and equipment

  • Mentor and lead future technicians as our team grows

  • Deliver service that meets Daisy's standards for quality, reliability, and professionalism

What You Bring to the Team

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 5-7 years of AV, networking, low-voltage, or technology integration experience,

  • Experience in several of the following: lighting, shading, networking/Wi-Fi, indoor and outdoor audio/video, home theaters, security, surveillance, and smart home automation

  • Experience with Control4, Crestron, or similar smart home automation platforms preferred

  • Industry certifications (CEDIA, AVIXA, manufacturer certifications, etc.) preferred

  • Minnesota Power Limited Technician (PLT) license preferred.

  • If you don't currently have your PLT, you must be willing to obtain it. Daisy will provide paid study time, pay for the exam, and support you through the licensing process.

  • 3+ years of qualifying low-voltage experience and eligible to pursue a Minnesota Power Limited Technician (PLT) license.

  • Positive attitude, professional work ethic, and strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills, with the ability to lead projects and mentor others.

  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills

  • Must pass a drug screen and background check

  • Valid Minnesota driver's license with a clean driving record

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and work in a variety of physical environments

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation

  • Paid training and professional development

  • Paid PLT licensing support for qualified candidates

  • Career growth opportunities within a growing national company

  • The opportunity to help build Daisyโ€™s Minneapolis location from the ground up
