What does a freelance script writer do?

As a freelance script writer, your duties vary somewhat depending on the needs of your clients, though for the most part you focus on the writing and editing of scripts for video productions. Job description

About the Role

We are looking for a senior copywriter (freelance) who can develop ideas and bring them to life. This is a hybrid role for someone who can concept social-first campaigns, write scripts and copy, and create content across both traditional and emerging production methods.

This person should be a strong conceptual thinker and versatile writer, comfortable moving between campaign lines, scripts, and long-form storytelling. They stay current with culture and platform trends, and know how to translate a brief into ideas that feel native to social.

Experience working on sustainability, ESG, or purpose-driven campaigns is a strong plus. This is not a management role, but it does require independence, initiative, and the ability to thrive under tight timelines.

Responsibilities:
  • Concept Ideas Quickly: Actively develop and iterate on social-first concepts, scripts, and copy, moving fast without sacrificing craft.
  • Write Across Formats: Write social copy, campaign lines, presentation language, and narrative framing that turn stories into engaging creative.
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work closely with a Creative Director, Art Director, editors, and motion graphics artists to develop ideas and shape them through execution.
  • Contribute in a Fast-Paced Environment: Thrive in a team built around speed, flexibility, and quick creative turnarounds, while maintaining strong thinking and attention to craft.
About YouThe essentials:
  • Experience: 5-8 years of copywriting experience in a top-tier agency or tech-forward creative studio. Experience working on sustainability or ESG campaigns is a strong plus.
  • Strong Writing and Concepting Skills: You can develop clear, compelling creative ideas and write them well across formats.
  • Comfortable Across Production Methods: You know how to make content through traditional production methods and are also comfortable adapting to new tools, like AI, as part of the process.
  • Social-First Instincts: You understand how content should feel on social and know how to create ideas that are platform-aware and culturally relevant.
  • Collaborative Working Style: You work well across a multidisciplinary team and know how to build ideas in partnership with different creative disciplines.
  • Independence and Follow-Through: You can take a brief, find creative angles quickly, and move work forward without needing constant direction.
  • Comfort with Speed and Deadlines: You do well in fast-moving environments, and you know how to keep the work strong while moving quickly.
  • Client-Facing Communication Skills: You can speak clearly about ideas, explain your thinking, and contribute confidently in presentations.

At Monks, we believe in fostering an environment where a diversity of perspectives can thrive. We proactively work to design hiring processes that promote equity and inclusion while mitigating bias. We celebrate diversity and are committed to building a team that reflects the communities we serve. We welcome and encourage qualified applicants, from all backgrounds, who are excited to contribute to our mission.

Monks is committed to ensuring equal access and participation for people with disabilities. We are committed to treating people with disabilities in a way that allows them to maintain their dignity and independence. We believe in integration, and we are committed to meeting the needs of people with disabilities in a timely manner. We will do so by removing and preventing barriers to accessibility and by meeting our accessibility requirements under local accessibility laws.
