What does a freelance script editor do?

A Freelance Script Editor works with writers and production teams to review, revise, and improve scripts for film, television, or other media projects. Their main responsibilities include identifying plot holes, enhancing dialogue, ensuring consistency, and providing feedback to strengthen the story and characters. They often work on a project-by-project basis, offering their expertise to help scripts meet creative and production standards before filming begins.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a freelance script editor?

To thrive as a Freelance Script Editor, you need strong command of storytelling, grammar, and script structure, often backed by experience in screenwriting or film studies. Familiarity with industry-standard software like Final Draft or Celtx, and knowledge of formatting guidelines, is essential. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and the ability to give constructive feedback help build strong client relationships and improve scripts effectively. These skills and qualities ensure scripts are polished, professionally formatted, and ready for production, increasing their chances of success.

What are common challenges freelance script editors face when working with multiple clients?

Freelance script editors often juggle projects for different clients simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. Each client may have unique expectations, preferred communication styles, and feedback processes, so adapting quickly and maintaining clear communication is essential. Additionally, script editors must balance providing constructive feedback while respecting the writer’s creative vision, which can sometimes be challenging. Building long-term client relationships and consistently meeting deadlines are also key to success in this role.

Job description

At AKQA (part of WPP) we believe in the imaginative application of art and science to create beautiful ideas, products and services. With an entrepreneurial and collaborative approach, we design adaptive digital services and applications that capture the imagination, delivering impressive returns for our clients.

Copywriters at AKQA apply artistry and craftsmanship to strategic insight to create and bring to life beautiful ideas that move the world. Skilled storytellers and conceptors, they work in a multidisciplinary environment to develop ideas that delight customers and deliver results for clients. The most exciting of them are big thinkers with a sharp comedic instinct, able to distill a product benefit into its simplest, funniest form and tailor it to feel native wherever it lives

We are seeking a conceptual Associate Creative Director (ACD) Copywriter to join an existing team on a fast-moving campaign stream for one of the most recognized consumer tax software brands in the world. You will help the team concept and write a few comedic product spot scripts, showcasing the product benefit in the simplest and funniest way possible. The work leans heavily social in length and format (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook), with some more traditional CTV in the mix. Our internal team with this exact skillset is already on the project and at capacity, so we are bringing in additional senior support to help move a large volume of deliverables through the pipeline without dropping the bar on craft or comedy. This is a freelance role from ASAP through September 25, 2026.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Concept and write up to 30 comedic product spot scripts on the campaign stream, showcasing the product benefit in the simplest and funniest way possible
  • Develop big ideas and translate them into sharp, comedic scripts across social-first formats, with some more traditional CTV
  • Tailor tone, length, and format to the specific needs of each social platform, ensuring every spot feels native to TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook
  • Bring an ACD-level point of view, elevating ideas and self-editing sharply to keep quality high under a tight timeline
  • Work quickly and collaboratively alongside an existing creative team to move a high volume of deliverables through the pipeline
  • Contribute to a culture of creative excellence, pushing for the most distinctive and effective solutions at every stage of the work

QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS

  • A compelling portfolio demonstrating big ideas and strong comedic chops across a variety of tones
  • Proven experience as a conceptual copywriter at the ACD level
  • A gift for distilling a product benefit into its simplest, funniest, most memorable form
  • Fluency in the tone, pacing, and formats of social-first content across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, with the range to write for CTV as well
  • The ability to produce a high volume of quality scripts at speed within a collaborative team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Collaborative, receptive to feedback, and motivated by delivering work that is as smart as it is funny

Location & Commitment

  • Remote; can be done from anywhere in the United States within approved states
  • August 31, 2026 through September 25, 2026
  • 40 hours/week
  • Expected weekly compensation: 4,800 to 5,000 USD
