What is a freelance scenic carpenter?

A Freelance Scenic Carpenter is a skilled craftsperson who builds, assembles, and installs scenery and stage elements for theater, film, television, or live events on a project-by-project basis. Unlike full-time carpenters employed by a single company, freelance scenic carpenters work independently, often juggling multiple clients and projects. Their responsibilities include reading technical drawings, constructing stage sets, and collaborating with designers and production teams to bring creative visions to life. Flexibility, strong woodworking skills, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are essential traits for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance scenic carpenter?

To thrive as a Freelance Scenic Carpenter, you need strong woodworking, construction, and problem-solving skills, often backed by experience or relevant technical training in theatrical set building. Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, scenic drafting software, and safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Attention to detail, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with designers and production teams. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient, and creative construction of stage sets that meet tight deadlines and high artistic standards.

What are some common challenges freelance scenic carpenters face when working on multiple productions simultaneously?

Freelance scenic carpenters often juggle several projects at once, which can lead to challenges such as managing tight deadlines, adapting to varying design specifications, and coordinating with different production teams. Effective time management and clear communication are essential to ensure that all deliverables meet safety and quality standards. Additionally, freelancers must be adaptable, as each venue or client may have unique requirements and workflows. Building a reliable network and maintaining strong organizational skills can help overcome these challenges.

Job description

Build Cool Stuff. Get Your Hands Dirty. Make Some Magic.

Goblin Studios is looking for a talented Fabricator / Scenic Carpenter to join our

growing crew. We design and build immersive themed environments, giant props,

custom scenic elements, interactive experiences, and all kinds of weird, wonderful, and

one-of-a-kind creations.

No two days are the same around here. One week you might be building a themed

facade, the next you're helping install a massive project on-site. If you enjoy working

with your hands, solving creative problems, and seeing your work come to life, you'll fit

right in.

What You'll Be Doing

 Building scenic elements, props, and custom fabrication projects.

 Performing scenic carpentry and general shop fabrication.

 Working with the team to solve build challenges and create high-quality finished

pieces.

 Assisting with on-site installations (sometimes indoors, sometimes outdoors,

sometimes wherever the adventure takes us).

 Keeping the shop clean, organized, and safe. Seriously—everyone cleans.

Taking out trash, sweeping, organizing tools, and leaving your workspace better

than you found it are part of the job. If you think cleaning is beneath you, this

probably isn't the place for you.

 Working independently when needed while also being a solid teammate.

 Meeting production schedules without sacrificing craftsmanship.

What We're Looking For

Required

 The ability to read and translate technical drawings, CAD files and shop specs.

 The ability to construct custom props, flats, platforms and themed structures

using but not limited to wood, plastic and composite materials.

 Experience with scenic carpentry or similar fabrication work. (2 -5 yrs)

 Reliable transportation.

 Strong safe operation of standard woodshop machinery

 Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

 Strong work ethic and attention to detail.

 Positive attitude and willingness to jump in wherever needed.

 Flexibility to adapt as projects evolve.

 Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced shop environment.

Bonus Points If You Have

 Experience working with Bondo and fiberglass.

 Experience with themed entertainment, props, or exhibit fabrication.

The Schedule

This isn't your typical Monday-Friday, 9-to-5 job—and honestly, that's part of what

makes it fun.

Our schedule changes based on production deadlines and installation dates. Some

weeks are standard shop hours. Other weeks may include early mornings, evenings,

weekends, or longer days as we bring projects across the finish line. Flexibility is a

must.

Pay

Compensation is based on experience and will be discussed during the interview

process.

Why Goblin Studios?

We don't build ordinary things.

At Goblin Studios, you'll work alongside talented makers creating immersive

environments and unforgettable experiences for clients across the country. Every

project brings new challenges, new techniques, and new opportunities to learn.

We value craftsmanship, creativity, accountability, and people who aren't afraid to pitch

in wherever they're needed. Whether you're cutting lumber, sculpting foam, installing

scenery, or sweeping the shop floor, every job matters because every project is a team

effort.

If you're ready to build things that make people stop and say, Whoa... that's

awesome, We'd love to meet you.

Apply today and come build something extraordinary with Goblin Studios.
