What does a freelance RF filter design engineer do?

A Freelance RF Filter Design Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and testing radio frequency (RF) filters that are used to allow or block specific frequency signals in electronic devices. They work independently or on contract to provide custom solutions for clients in telecommunications, aerospace, defense, and consumer electronics. Their role typically involves circuit simulation, schematic design, prototyping, and ensuring that filters meet technical requirements for performance and reliability. Freelance engineers often offer flexibility and specialized expertise for companies needing short-term or project-based RF filter development.

What is the difference between Freelance Rf Filter Design Engineer vs RF Circuit Design Engineer?

AspectFreelance Rf Filter Design EngineerRF Circuit Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires RF engineering certifications, specialized training in filter designRequires RF engineering degrees, certifications, and circuit design expertise
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, often remoteIn-house or consulting, team-based environments
Industry UsageUsed in telecommunications, aerospace, defense for custom filter solutionsApplied across wireless, consumer electronics, and communication systems

While both roles involve RF engineering, a Freelance Rf Filter Design Engineer specializes in designing RF filters independently for various clients, focusing on custom solutions. An RF Circuit Design Engineer has a broader scope, working on various RF circuits within a company or project team. The freelance role offers flexibility and specialization, whereas the RF Circuit Design Engineer typically works within structured teams on diverse RF projects.

How do freelance RF filter design engineers typically collaborate with clients and other engineers during a project?

Freelance RF Filter Design Engineers often work remotely, using digital communication tools to collaborate with clients, project managers, and sometimes other engineering specialists. They typically participate in virtual meetings to discuss specifications, share design progress, and address technical challenges. Providing regular updates and detailed documentation is essential, as is being responsive to feedback and design revisions throughout the project. Clear communication and efficient use of simulation and CAD tools help ensure the final filter meets performance and integration requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance RF filter design engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance RF Filter Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, strong understanding of RF principles, and experience in filter design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with simulation tools like ADS, HFSS, or CST, and familiarity with PCB design software are commonly required, along with knowledge of relevant industry standards. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help set candidates apart, especially when working with remote clients or multidisciplinary teams. These capabilities ensure precise, efficient filter designs that meet client specifications and project deadlines in a competitive market.

Job description

New York City, NY · On-site (5 days/week) · Full-time Compensation: $200,000–$280,000 + competitive equity

About the Company

Our client is the cloud platform for modern tech companies — the power of the cloud without the complexity or cost, letting the next generation of builders run anything, anywhere. It lets top engineering teams instantly create production-grade infrastructure on any cloud provider (AWS, Azure, GCP), deploy their application code, and monitor and manage it, so they can focus on building product instead of managing infrastructure. It's Series A, profitable, with 8x ARR growth since 2022, HQ'd in New York with an SF office.

Founded 2020 · 11–50 people (Series A) · Industry: Developer infrastructure

The Role

The client is hiring a Design / Micro-Interaction Engineer to own the craft and feel of the platform — information architecture, core product flows, micro-interactions, and a full rebrand rollout. This is not a handoff role: you design it, you implement it, you own it.

Tech stack: Figma + hands-on front-end implementation in code.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of design or micro-interaction engineering, with a portfolio demonstrating craft and curiosity
  • Comfortable implementing designs in code, not just Figma — an independent force who polishes the product without needing frontend-engineer bandwidth
  • Pre-AI technical frontend experience — actually understands the code being pushed
  • An AI-native mindset, using AI to move faster
  • Based in or relocating to New York City
  • A portfolio showing unique design sensibility and clean, intentional execution (not vibe-coded)
Nice to Haves
  • A portfolio that demonstrates genuine taste and craft, not just technical execution — the primary filter
  • A background at Vercel, Linear, or a developer-tooling company with a strong design-engineering culture
  • Excited about implementing their own designs using AI tools without waiting on engineering
  • Can name a collaborator who was better than them — signals low ego and team orientation
  • Has shipped micro-interactions and polished product experiences to real users in production
  • Genuine curiosity about dev tooling and cloud infrastructure, not just the design problem
Why Join
  • Own the craft end to end: not a handoff role — you design it, implement it, and own it, from micro-interactions and core flows to a full rebrand
  • Direct founder collaboration: work directly with the co-founder and design lead
  • Full autonomy: no product team — engineers own the full development lifecycle, talk to customers directly, and decide what to build in two-week cycles
Details
  • Location — New York City, NY
  • Work policy — On-site, 5 days/week
  • Compensation — $200,000–$280,000 + competitive equity
  • Visa sponsorship — Not available
  • Employment type — Full-time
