A Freelance Racing Journalist is a writer or reporter who specializes in covering motorsports events, teams, drivers, and industry news on a contract or assignment basis rather than as a full-time staff member for a single publication. They may write articles, produce multimedia content, or provide live event coverage for various magazines, websites, or broadcasters. Freelance racing journalists often pitch stories to editors, manage their own schedules, and build relationships within the racing industry to stay up-to-date with the latest developments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance racing journalist?

To thrive as a Freelance Racing Journalist, you need strong writing skills, in-depth motorsports knowledge, and experience in journalism or communications. Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, content management systems, and multimedia tools like cameras or audio recorders is often required. Outstanding networking, adaptability, and deadline management set top professionals apart in this field. These competencies enable journalists to deliver timely, engaging, and accurate coverage in a competitive and fast-paced environment.

How do freelance racing journalists typically build relationships with teams, drivers, and event organizers to secure interviews and access?

Freelance racing journalists often rely on proactive networking and professionalism to establish and maintain relationships within the motorsport community. Attending races, press events, and industry conferences provides valuable opportunities to meet key contacts and demonstrate reliability. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, you'll develop content that helps players discover, participate in, and celebrate Magic play experiences across both our competitive play system and in-store play programs.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and publish content that highlights players, communities, events, and play experiences across Magic's competitive and in-store play programs.
  • Manage editorial content including event guides, decklists, feature stories, community spotlights, tournament coverage, event recaps, and other player-facing communications.
  • Produce and edit short-form video and social content using event, livestream, and other assets.
  • Identify compelling stories, moments, and achievements that can be transformed into engaging editorial, video, and social content.
  • Partner with event, tournament operations, and communications to support content before, during, and after live events.

  • Collaborate across internal teams and external partners to deliver engaging player-facing content.
  • Use audience insights and performance metrics to continuously improve content impact and engagement.
What You'll Bring
  • 4+ years of experience in content management, editorial, journalism, digital content production creative development, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of Magic: The Gathering, including organized play, community play experiences, and the broader player community.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, approximately 8-10 times per year and usually on weekends.
  • Outstanding writing, editing, storytelling, and communication skills.
  • Experience crafting, editing, or producing written, visual, or video content for digital audiences, including short-form video content.
  • Experience managing multiple projects, deadlines, contributors, and stakeholders in a fast-paced environment, up to and including hour-by-hour or even minute-by-minute deadlines.
  • Experience working with content management systems, digital publishing tools, and content performance metrics.
  • Experience working with freelancers, creators, agencies, vendors, or external contributors.
  • Experience with live events, gaming, esports, entertainment, or community-focused programs is a plus.
