DFG:
The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conserving the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts' citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities.

Job Opening: The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) launched a PAM project in February 2025 consisting of 17 bottom-mounted archival stations, and two real-time stations. The project is primarily focused on using acoustic detections to better understand behavior and habitat use of North Atlantic right whales. The findings from this project are aimed at providing information to manage fisheries and vessel speed restrictions in local waters. DMF seeks applicants for the position of Seasonal Protected Species Acoustic Monitoring Technician to perform the following duties:
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist in deploying and retrieving passive acoustic monitoring equipment for regular servicing in June/July and Nov/Dec, as well as intermittent trips as needed.
  2. Aid in data management as well as equipment maintenance and preparation.
  3. Assist in analysis of acoustic monitoring data for the detection of large whales according to existing protocols.
  4. Visually survey for marine mammals and sea turtles at-sea.
  5. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills, abilities):
  1. Familiarity with marine mammal and sea turtles species in Massachusetts' coastal waters.
  2. Experience working at-sea including offshore.
  3. Experience with computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite. Familiarity with the R programming language and Raven Pro are additionally preferred.
  4. Ability to work as a team and ask questions.
  5. Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate field trips. Availability outside of state holidays, including weekends, is required.
  6. Ability to work in variable weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold environments.
  7. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds safely.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's Class D license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside.
