Job description

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field; 4 years of related experience.

Job Description: 

To provide technical guidance and direction in the development, implementation, and maintenance of information systems at the medical branch.

Reports to: Executive Director, Business & Academic Systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field plus three (3) years of related experience, or bachelor's degree in a related field plus five (5) years of related experience. Related fields include Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Engineering, or a comparable discipline. Related experience means business intelligence, data warehousing, or analytics development, including hands-on development of enterprise semantic/tabular data models in Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, or SQL Server Analysis Services.  
  • Experience in an academic medical center, health system, or higher-education institution
  • Familiarity with clinical, academic, research, or financial data domains
  • Experience supporting enterprise-scale BI platforms serving multiple stakeholder groups
  • Experience with data governance, data catalogs, or metric standardization
  • Experience with source control and CI/CD promotion for BI artifacts (Git / Azure DevOps, Fabric deployment pipelines)
  • Experience with Tabular Editor scripting / C# automation
  • Experience preparing analytics data structures for AI or machine learning workflows
  • Microsoft certification: PL-300, DP-600, or DP-700

Essential Job Functions:

The Senior Semantic Model Developer designs, develops, secures, and deploys enterprise-grade semantic data models on Microsoft Fabric capacity. This position delivers the trusted, high-performance analytical models that support institutional reporting, analytics, and AI initiatives across an academic medical enterprise. Work is hands-on with SQL Server data warehouses, Tabular Editor, DAX, and row-level security, in partnership with data engineering, reporting, analytics, and AI teams.

  1. Design, develop, and maintain enterprise semantic models using Tabular Editor, deployed to Microsoft Fabric / Power BI Premium capacity.
  2. Develop measures, KPIs, calculation groups, and supporting metadata using advanced DAX, including query performance optimization.
  3. Apply dimensional modeling and enterprise BI standards - star schema, conformed dimensions, and reusable certified measures.
  4. Design and optimize SQL views and analytical objects in the enterprise data warehouse to support semantic models.
  5. Design and implement Row-Level Security using role-based and attribute-based patterns, and manage security group mappings in line with institutional governance standards.
  6. Manage the full model lifecycle - development, version control, testing, deployment, refresh management, and performance monitoring.
  7. Support CI/CD-style promotion of models across Development, Test, and Production environments in collaboration with platform teams.
  8. Partner with report developers, analysts, and data scientists to ensure correct and efficient use of enterprise models.
  9. Contribute to enterprise initiatives including centralized KPI repositories, governed metrics, and AI-ready semantic layers.
  10. Produce and maintain documentation and development standards for the semantic layer.
  11. Adhere to institutional data privacy, security, and compliance policies, including HIPAA and FERPA requirements applicable to institutional data.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced DAX, including complex calculations, calculation groups, and performance tuning
  • Strong T-SQL and experience building analytical views in an enterprise data warehouse
  • Hands-on experience with Tabular Editor (v2 or v3) for semantic model development
  • Demonstrated experience deploying and managing semantic models on Power BI Premium or Microsoft Fabric capacity, including refresh and performance management
  • Proven experience designing and implementing Row-Level Security, including dynamic and attribute-based patterns
  • Solid working knowledge of dimensional modeling and semantic layer design
  • Working familiarity with Tabular Object Model (TOM) concepts
  • Ability to work independently on complex technical initiatives and communicate effectively with analysts, senior stakeholders, and executive leadership
  • Strong technical documentation skills
