POSITION SUMMARY

(General statement reflecting the overall purpose of the position)

Performs administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of physician. The duties of Medical Assistants vary depending on the clinic, size of practice, physician specialty and physician preference. Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting with patient care. Medical Assistants report to the Clinic Supervisor and Physician.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School Diploma

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: One year in a physician or other clinical location.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS: Basic Life Support (BLS)

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES: Medical Assistant Certification.

SPECIAL SKILLS: Medical termination

SUPERVISES: N/A

Greets and escorts patients to exam/procedure rooms.

Takes and records vital signs and medical histories in accurate & precise manner.

Explains treatment procedures to patients, prepares patients for examinations, assists physician during exams/procedures. May relay instructions to patients/families as directed by physician.

May perform minor procedures (suture removal, dressing changes, wound care) as directed and deemed competent by physician.

E

May collect and prepare laboratory specimens.

F

Appropriately disposes of contaminated supplies, according to Infection Control policies/procedures.

G

Accurately charts in patients' medical record. Maintains accurate and organized records of patient visits, treatment, testing reports, etc. Manages charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.

H

May prepare and administer medications/injections as directed by physician.

I

Authorize prescription drug refills as directed by physician. Telephone or fax prescriptions to pharmacy. PHYSICIAN MUST DESIGNATE SPECIFIC AUTHORITY TO MEDICAL ASSISTANT TO PHONE IN PRESCRIPTIONS AND RE-FILLS.

Arrange for hospital admissions or laboratory, radiological procedures, or other testing.

Obtains lab/radiology/other reports while maintaining these in a file until seen and initialed by physician. Reports critical values immediately to physician

Obtain pre-authorizations as required for outpatient services and office procedures.

M

Assists with patient referrals and follow up as directed by physician. Screens phone calls from patients, returns messages, and provides pertinent information as directed by physician.

N

Must cross-train to learn receptionist duties such as answering phones, greeting patients, patient referrals (if needed) handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, and billing procedures.

May arrange exam room instruments and equipment. Order and maintain supplies and equipment as directed by physician.

Demonstrates skill and accuracy in hospital computer application.

Q

Maintains harmonious relationship within the office and with co-workers providing support and assistance to ensure quality patient care.

Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients, their families, and other staff members.

Required Protective Equipment:

  • Mask, gown, medical gloves, face shield as necessary and other equipment as required by OSHA and CDC regulations and hospital policy.
