What is a Freelance Product Design Engineer?

A Freelance Product Design Engineer is a professional who works independently, rather than as a full-time employee, to design and develop new products for clients. They use engineering principles and design skills to create functional, manufacturable, and marketable products. Their responsibilities often include conceptualizing ideas, creating prototypes, performing tests, and collaborating with manufacturers. Freelance Product Design Engineers may work across industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, or medical devices, and typically manage multiple projects for different clients at a time.

What is the difference between Freelance Product Design Engineer vs Freelance Industrial Designer?

AspectFreelance Product Design EngineerFreelance Industrial Designer
CredentialsEngineering degree, technical skillsDesign degree, creative skills
Work EnvironmentTechnical, collaborative with engineersCreative, client-focused projects
Industry UsageProduct development, engineering firmsConsumer products, branding

Freelance Product Design Engineers focus on technical aspects, engineering constraints, and functional prototypes, often working closely with engineering teams. Freelance Industrial Designers emphasize aesthetics, user experience, and visual appeal, working directly with clients on branding and product appearance. Both roles require design skills but differ in technical depth and project focus.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance product design engineers when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance product design engineers often juggle multiple projects for different clients, which can lead to challenges such as managing conflicting deadlines, adapting to varying design standards, and ensuring clear communication with each client. Prioritizing tasks and staying organized are crucial for meeting client expectations and maintaining high-quality work. Additionally, freelancers must be proactive in clarifying project requirements and regularly updating clients to avoid misunderstandings and keep projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Product Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Product Design Engineer, you need expertise in mechanical or industrial design, CAD modeling, and a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with technical tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and rapid prototyping methods, as well as knowledge of manufacturing processes, is typically required. Strong project management, communication, and creative problem-solving skills help you stand out when working with diverse clients and teams. These skills ensure you can deliver innovative, manufacturable solutions that meet client needs and industry standards.

Job description

Join us in pioneering breakthroughs in healthcare. For everyone. Everywhere. Sustainably.
Our inspiring and caring environment forms a global community that celebrates diversity and individuality. We encourage you to step beyond your comfort zone, offering resources and flexibility to foster your professional and personal growth, all while valuing your unique contributions.

About ViDA

ViDA is Varian's data and AI team behind the global fleet of linear accelerators (LINACs) used in cancer treatment. ViDA transforms telemetry, event logs, and operational data from machines in hospitals worldwide into actionable insight enabling predictive maintenance, fault analytics, performance monitoring, and AIassisted operations that directly support patient care.

About the role

As a Product Design Engineer within the ViDA team, you will serve as the product, UX, and frontend voice in a highly technical environment. You will take complex, datadense outputs-including AI model results, time series telemetry, fault streams, and fleet KPIs-and translate them into clear, trustworthy, and efficient user interfaces for clinical engineers, medical physicists, and service teams.

This is a handson, craftdriven role combining product design, UX, and frontend engineering. You will own experiences endtoend, from user research and interaction design through implementation and iteration, ensuring that ViDA's data applications meet the high standards required in a clinical, highstakes environment.

What you'll do (Job responsibilities)

As a Product Design Engineer, you will: Lead endtoend UX for ViDA's data applications and dashboards, including user research, information architecture, prototyping, visual design, and usability testing.

  • Engage directly with users-clinical engineers, medical physicists, service teams, and internal stakeholders-to understand real workflows, constraints, vocabulary, and cognitive load.

  • Translate complex telemetry streams and AI model outputs into interfaces that prioritise clarity, density management, and rapid decisionmaking.

  • Apply strong informationdesign principles to data visualisation, including chart selection, hierarchy, colour usage, annotations, accessibility, and thoughtful handling of empty, error, and loading states.

  • Design and build production frontend applications using modern web technologies such as React, Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind, and component libraries (e.g., shadcn/ui), moving fluidly between design tools and code.

  • Design BI dashboards with the same UX rigour and product mindset applied to custom web applications.

  • Own and evolve ViDA's design system and shared component library to ensure consistency and scalability across data products.

  • Partner closely with data scientists, AI engineers, and analytics engineers to turn raw use cases into shipped, adopted products (not prototypes).

  • Own a meaningful portion of the application lifecycle, including scoping, design, implementation, deployment, observability, and continuous improvement.

  • Leverage AIassisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, v0) where appropriate, applying judgement to maximise quality and productivity.

  • Mobile app knowledge (required): contribute to mobile app UX and/or mobilefirst workflows (e.g., field/service experiences), bringing strong understanding of mobile interaction patterns and constraints.

What you bring (Essential skills)

We recognise experience can be gained in many ways. If you meet some, but not all, of the criteria listed, we still encourage you to apply.

We're looking for evidence of strong craft, sound judgement, and the ability to take ideas from discovery to production.

  • Experience building datafacing or productfacing web applications, with UX as a core responsibility.

  • A portfolio demonstrating shipped, realworld interfaces with clear design rationale and decisionmaking.

  • Strong frontend engineering skills with React, Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind, and modern component libraries.

  • Handson experience with UX practices, including user interviews, information architecture, wireframing, prototyping, usability testing, and iterative design.

  • Strong judgement in information design and data visualisation, including chart selection, hierarchy, colour systems, and accessibility considerations.

  • Comfort working with SQL and querying data warehouses or lakehouses to understand and validate the data being presented.

  • Experience with AIassisted development workflows and an understanding of when to rely on automation versus manual control.

  • Familiarity with modern application lifecycles, including CI/CD, deployment, and observability.

  • Mobile app knowledge: experience designing, improving, or contributing to mobile applications and/or mobilefirst UX patterns (iOS/Android or crossplatform), ideally in operational or field contexts.

Nice to have (Desired skills)

  • Experience designing for expert users in highstakes, datadense environments (e.g., healthcare, medical devices, industrial monitoring, observability platforms).

  • Accessibility expertise, including WCAG standards, keyboard navigation, and colourblindsafe visualisation design.

  • Experience building or maintaining design systems, component libraries, and documentation.

  • Advanced data visualisation experience beyond standard charting libraries (e.g., D3, ECharts, Plotly, Observable Plot).

  • Familiarity with Python and lightweight backend frameworks (e.g., FastAPI).

  • Exposure to Azure and Databricks / Delta Lake.

  • Experience or interest in regulated industries such as medical devices, healthcare, or pharmaceuticals.
